Windows 10 Enterprise Now Available

A volume license for Windows 10 has been obtained by the department and copies are now available at 395 Cory Hall, the Helpdesk. The 64bit version available contains the long term servicing branch of Windows. As with any new OS version, we recommend taking a cautious approach to upgrading: not upgrading too soon, waiting for initial patch releases, and so on. That being said, we have so far seen good results with Windows 10 upgrades. Windows 10 works fine with our infrastructure (wifi, file service, …), and works well on machines that shipped initially with Windows 7 or 8.

So you can choose to update your current system to Windows 10 now, or wait until your next machine purchase comes with Windows 10 pre-installed. Windows 7 will remain supported until January 2020.

Mailing List Server Maintenance, Wednesday 5pm-5:15pm

The EECS Department’s Mailing List Server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu will be undergoing maintenance Wednesday Sep 9, 2015 between 5pm and 5:15pm. Operating system patches will be installed which require a server reboot.

Sep 2015 Windows Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, September 8th, 2015.

PRINT and WINTERM will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, September 9th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00am Wednesday, September 9th, depending on additional software updates.

Soda Hall Scheduled Maintenance, Mon. 8/24 6:30PM

We will be performing a software upgrade of the Soda Hall main router tonight at 6:30 PM. This upgrade is intended to address a software bug we have been encountering; the same upgrade was successful last week in Sutardja Dai Hall. Network service throughout the building will be impacted for approximately five minutes while the router reboots.

Brief outage to numerous services, Thur Aug 20

Various IRIS Linux servers will be rebooted between 8pm and 9pm tonight to complete operating system patching. No service will be down for more than a few minutes.

Affected services include:
* jabber.eecs
* www.eecs / www.cs
* iris.eecs
* lists.eecs
* wiki.eecs
* apps.eecs
* IRIS-hosted virtual web hosts

Mailing List Server Maintenance, Wednesday 6-8pm

The Department’s mailing list server, lists.eecs.berkeley.edu, will be down for a major upgrade on Wednesday August 19th from 6pm-8pm. During this time the service will be migrated to a new machine and the [mailing list software](http://www.sympa.org/) will be upgraded from the current version (5.4.5) [to the latest version, 6.2.3](http://www.sympa.org/distribution/latest-stable/NEWS).

During the outage, no incoming or outgoing mail will be processed. There will likely be delays in delivering mail as sending machines will wait some amount of time before retrying, but no email should be lost.

Mailing list owners may want to [browse the documentation](http://www.sympa.org/manual/index) to learn about the new features.

Soda Hall Network Maintenance, 8/13/15 8PM

There will be a brief network outage this evening at 8PM while we perform a software upgrade on the main router for Soda Hall. The outage will affect all Soda Hall networking as well as any services hosted in Soda Hall, and should last for approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

This is a vendor-recommended software upgrade to address bugs which have been affecting management of the device as well as some performance issues.

Brief service interruption for gateway.eecs, cricket.eecs

At 4:30pm today, we will briefly shutdown gateway.eecs and cricket.eecs, to move them to another rack in the same room.

Downtime should be only 5-10 minutes.

gateway.eecs is used for some outgoing SMTP connections, such as might be configured in Thunderbird or Outlook.

cricket.eecs is used in our network database to display port usage information.
