AirBears Abatement, August 14th 2015

August 4, 2015 by Derek Calderon

At the end of the day on August 14th, the legacy AirBears wireless network will be permanently deactivated in favor of AirBears2, eduroam, and CalVisitor. To minimize interruptions, please make sure you are already switched over to one of these newer networks. If you have any trouble connecting, or are unsure which network to use, please visit http://ist.berkeley.edu/airbears or the EECS Helpdesk in 395 Cory Hall.

The original announcement from campus network services is included below. For updated information, please see ucbsystems.org, CMR# 3975.

—

After many years of faithful service the AirBears wireless network is being discontinued. After August 14th access to the UC Berkeley networks and Internet will no longer be available through this SSID.

Current students, staff, faculty, and affiliates who have not already done so, are invited to create a wireless key and use the AirBears2 wireless network. AirBears2 provides full campus connectivity without the redundancy of a login portal after initial configuration.

Visitors are welcome to connect using the CalVisitor wireless network, which provides Internet and basic campus connectivity without the necessity of a guest account.

Details on available WiFi Network Services and how to connect to them is available here:

Wired Network Partial Outage, SDH Floors 1-4 on 7/7/15

July 7, 2015 by Derek Calderon

There was a partial network outage today for floors 1-4 of Sutardja Dai Hall; the outage affected any machine on the 128.32.156.0/24 subnet which was using an address between 128.32.156.64 and 128.32.156.127 (25% of all hosts on these floors). Hosts in this address range had EECS connectivity but were unable to reach campus or the wider Internet. Wireless service in some areas was likely also influenced, as the wireless access points use this subnet for their connectivity.

Through collaboration with IST-NOS we learned that a typographical error was made while adding a new route in the campus datacenter at Earl Warren Hall, causing traffic destined for these 64 hosts to land in Warren rather than Sutardja Dai. The erroneous route was pulled and traffic is now being routed correctly.

If you continue to notice any issues, please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Apple now replacing laptop batteries still under AppleCare

July 1, 2015 by Carlos Caceres

Apple has added a new feature to its AppleCare+ warranty service. The company said it will now replace the battery on a device if its capacity, or the amount of energy it’s able to hold, falls to below 80 percent.

To check if your Apple device is still under warranty, use https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

All Macbooks purchased through the department have Applecare for 3 years.

LDAP High-Availability Testing Wednesday 10pm

June 17, 2015 by Rob McNicholas

We are upgrading our [LDAP infrastructure](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/news/10933-department-ldap-upgrade-thu-jan) to replace an old server with a new machine. This server is a backup node which should take over the role of the LDAP server if the primary server fails. In order to ensure the new server is performing as expected, we will be simulating a failure of the primary node at 10pm on Wednesday, June 17th. The backup node should take over within 5 seconds. If all goes as planned, we will then bring the primary back up and call it a successful test.

During this testing, there will be brief (~5 second) interruptions in LDAP service. This will occur at least twice but possibly more if the first test is unsuccessful. During those brief intervals, anyone whose timing is especially good might notice trouble logging into any application that uses LDAP.

All testing will be over by 10:30pm at the latest, but probably much sooner.

Microsoft patches affecting some domain clients

June 11, 2015 by Lars Rohrbach

We have received multiple reports of people having trouble logging into EECS-domain Windows machines this morning, following application of the most recent Microsoft patches. Clients receive a message indicating: “The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship.”

Re-joining the EECS domain fixes this, but a simpler solution is also reported to work:
* Unplug your ethernet connection (wireless users may have a physical switch to disable wireless).
* Login with your EECS account as normal (it will used cached credentials).
* Reconnect ethernet cable (or enable wireless).
* Logout, and then test that you can successfully login normally (while connected) again.
