Installation of New NetApp File Storage

We are pleased to announce that we are moving to the next generation
of file storage in EECS.

Our current Network Appliance file storage hardware is approaching
its end of life, and our storage needs continue to grow.
Maintaining our own file storage systems has been valuable to research
and departmental operations, keeping costs down while providing centralized
storage with backups, snapshots, CIFS/NFS access, and room to grow.

Over the coming months, we will be migrating to a new cluster of NetApp
file servers, which will include disk-based backups and mirroring of current
data to the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Some changes to mounting and
some service downtime are expected, but details are still being worked out.
Look for upcoming announcements on how this migration might affect you
and your access to home.eecs, project.eecs and cluster.eecs.

Network Outage, Cory Hall 5th Floor, Friday Oct. 2

There is currently an unplanned network outage for the fifth floor of Cory Hall. Network staff are investigating.

Update 7:39: We have been able to get in touch with Cory Hall facilities staff and have learned that there was an unexpected power outage during this morning’s scheduled elevator maintenance. Electricians have been onsite and are working to restore power to the fifth floor at this time.

scheduled dhcp server outage Wednesday September 30, 2015 7am to 7:30am

The IRIS dhcp server will be down for maintenance on
Wednesday September 30, 2015 from 7am to 7:30am.
Devices with existing leases / IP assignments
on the IRIS wired and wireless networks
will not be affected. Devices broadcasting for
dhcp support will not be able to obtain an
IP assignment during the maintenance period.
We do not expect to need the full thirty
minutes for maintenance. New hardware is
being deployed to replace the old hardware
supplying DHCP service.

Scheduled Network Reboot, 9/28/15 7PM

We will be performing scheduled reboots of the Soda, Cory, and Sutardja Dai Hall aggregation routers this evening between 7 and 7:30 PM. Each building will incur a network interruption approximately five minutes long while the routers reboot.

These reboots are in order to further troubleshooting on a bug affecting SSH management access to the devices.

Though the scheduled downtime is 6:30am to 8am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

Network Outage SDH Nanolab – 9/20/15

There was a brief network outage in the fifth/sixth floor of the SDH Nanolab due to a failed UPS. Network staff were already onsite and the UPS has been bypassed; full service has been restored.

Campus recovering from major computing outage

EECS and the rest of campus is recovering from a major computing outage that started Friday evening around 6:15pm with a fire in the campus data center. Most critical services have been restored since about 1pm Saturday, Sep 19th. More information about the fire and its impact on campus IT systems can be found on the sites http://news.berkeley.edu/ and http://ucbsystems.org/

Most EECS / IRIS services are back to normal since around 1pm Saturday. Some servers may not have recovered and will need a reboot, and IRIS staff will be attending to those as they are discovered. You may report any remaining outages to the IRIS Helpdesk.

Department Webserver Maintenance, Thursday 7pm

The Department webserver will be down for 5 to 10 minutes tonight, Thursday Sep 17, beginning at 7pm, in order to install operating system patches.

wds.eecs returns to service

wds.eecs is up and running. Authenticated users may once again perform a basic Windows OS install over the network.
