April 2021 Windows Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, April 13th, 2021. PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, April 14th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, April 14th, depending on additional software updates.

Various Linux servers (login, dhcp, DNS, SMTP, NTP) downtime Tuesday April 13, 2021 06:30-07:45am

Various Linux servers will be down for patching and needed reboots to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.

login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.

The departmental dhcp server is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.

cronus one of the departmental DNS and time servers is scheduled for downtime from 6:45am-7:00am.

rhea the other departmental DNS and time server is scheduled for downtime from 7:00am-7:15am.

The departmental authenticating outgoing SMTP server gateway.eecs is scheduled for downtime from 7:5am to 7:45am.

We expect actual downtimes to be less than scheduled.

Network outage

A possible Cory switch failure occurred at about 1:25pm this afternoon, affecting at least some machines on the first floor and mezzanine of Cory Hall. Network staff are aware, and will investigate.

Network Outage for Sutardja Dai, Blum, Calvin Halls

As of 2:21 pm, networking for Sutardja Dai, Blum, and Calvin Halls is offline. Staff are en route to campus for further investigation.

Update: network connectivity was fully restored at 6:00PM when certain hosts which were causing instability were removed from the network. We will follow up tomorrow with the sysadmins of these hosts to try and prevent future incidents.

Mailing List Server maintenance, Wednesday March 3, 6pm-7pm

The EECS Mailing List server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu will be briefly down for maintenance tonight, Wednesday March 3, 2021, beginning at 6pm.

Routine Red Hat Linux operating system patches have been released which require a system restart. During this maintenance window, the web interface will be inaccessible, and any mail sent to a mailing list will be temporarily delayed until the server resumes operation. We anticipate an outage of no more than 30 minutes but some extra time is being scheduled in case of unforeseen problems.

Windows Terminal Service licenses unavailable during maintenance Friday, February 19

Our Terminal Services license manager host, RDSMANAGER, needs to be temporarily taken down so that we can make a repair to the virtual disk image file used by this virtual machine. We will be shutting down RDSMANAGER at about noon on Friday, February 19, 2021.

During this maintenance, any Windows Terminal Servers (such as winterm.eecs) will alert users that no valid Terminal Service license servers could be contacted — but other than the alert, no interruption of service should be noticed.

RDSMANAGER should be down for 4-6 hours. License service should resume as normal by about 6pm Friday.
