April IRIS Server Patching

April 10, 2026 by Lars Rohrbach

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, April 14th, 2026. Various IRIS Windows and Linux servers will be patched and rebooted Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Linux servers lists.eecs, iris2.eecs, (for access to the network and roster databases) will be patched and rebooted Wednesday night. DNS servers cronus and themis may also be briefly unavailable while rebooting at approximately 8:00pm Tuesday.

PRINT, WINTERM, and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, April 15th, at 3:00am. WINTERM may be unavailable until 10:00am Wednesday, depending on additional software updates.

On Thursday, April 16th, the departmental DHCP server is scheduled for downtime from about 9am to 9:30am (actual downtime is expected to be shorter than scheduled). Linux login servers login.eecs/login-mfa.eecs will also be patched and rebooted around this time.

Cory Hall partial power outage, Thursday, April 16, 2026

April 9, 2026 by Lars Rohrbach

Campus Facilities Services is scheduled to perform an urgent repair, replacing the main circuit breaker serving Cory Hall’s 188 Lab and 1st floor Mezzanine. An email from Logan Baldini, our Director of Facilities and Capital Projects, already went out on April 8 to Cory Hall occupants.

Work will take place Thursday, April 16, 8:15pm — 11:15pm. Power will be shut down for most of the south and west side of Cory Hall, including stairwells. Detailed room breakdown is available via Google Doc, attached to the email sent out by Logan.

We do not expect to lose power to our network switches and routers in Cory Hall during this work. If we do have unexpected power loss to our network equipment, then access to services hosted in Cory Hall (e.g. any research or instructional servers in 165 Cory) will be affected; we will monitor our equipment, but would expect service to resume once the electrical work is completed.

UPDATE

This work has been postponed by Campus Facilities Services. We will update or re-post when we have an revised schedule to report.

NetApp Fileserver Migration, Saturday April 18, 2026

April 3, 2026 by Lars Rohrbach

We are scheduling a NetApp migration to new hardware, from 8am to Noon on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

All Home directories and Project shares (CIFS/SMB and NFS) will experience disconnection during the migration that may cause data loss on active, open files.  Please close your open files and save them before Friday morning. Services (e.g. webservice) that depend on this storage will also be temporarily down or unresponsive. Because this is a migration to new hardware, clients may experience a series of short (minutes-long) disconnections as volumes complete their migration steps.

When maintenance is completed, NFS clients may automatically resume normal operation, but a reboot should help if they don’t. CIFS clients (such as Windows and MacOS) may need to remount filesystems, or simply be rebooted.

IT Support During Winter 2025 Energy Curtailment

December 17, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

Due to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Wednesday, December 24 to Thursday, January 1, reopening on Friday, January 2, 2026. Additionally, much of campus is on reduced support for December 22-23, January 2, and the week of January 5-9.

All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis.

The IRIS Helpdesk office will be closed Monday, December 22 through Friday, January 2, re-opening fully on Monday, January 12. If you need assistance during the week of January 5-9, please email help@eecs, and we should be able to reply and schedule an appointment with you if needed. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs during the campus closure period, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until at least January 5.

Requests for network support or new IRIS accounts that are received after noon Thursday, December 18 may not be processed until January 5, 2026.

During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (for details, see the Instructional website). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until at least January 5.

Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:

Instructional Computing Environment: inst@eecs

Research / Staff Computing Environment: help@eecs

Corrected exports for EECS NetApp file server

December 17, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

A recent report of a discrepancy in our file server NFS exports helped us to discover an error in our NFS export policies. The error would allow shares with the default NFS export setting to be mounted on some systems within EECS networks that they were not intended to be exported to.

We have corrected the error, and audited our NFS export policies. If you discover any unexpected change to availability of your home directory or project space, please feel free to reach out to help@eecs.
