IT Support During Winter 2020 Energy Curtailment

December 15, 2020 by Lars Rohrbach

Due to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Wednesday, December 23 to Monday, January 4, reopening on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis.

The IRIS Helpdesk will close early at noon on Tuesday, December 22, and will reopen on Tuesday, January 5. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until January 5.

Requests for new IRIS accounts that are received after 5pm December 21 may not be processed until January 5, 2021.

During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (for details, see the Instructional website). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until January 5.

Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:

Instructional Computing Environment: inst@eecs

Research / Staff Computing Environment: help@eecs

Changes to Firewall Ruleset for Berkeley Way West

September 1, 2020 by Lars Rohrbach

Summary

This announces the upcoming change to the firewall ruleset for the 8th floor of Berkeley Way West (BWW) on the 128.32.175.0/24 network.  On September 15, 2020, the network border firewall policies will be brought in line with the existing IRIS (EECS) firewall ruleset for secure production networks. This change is to help facilitate moving all IRIS networks to the campus Palo Alto firewall infrastructure. Also, going forward, emailed requests for BWW firewall exceptions will no longer be needed.  The standard IRIS network registration forms will be utilized to make web servers at BWW available to the outside Internet.

Making access to login.eecs “opt-in”

August 5, 2020 by Lars Rohrbach

The department unix login server, login.eecs, allows access for all EECS Standard account holders via SSH. Authentication uses one’s EECS username and EECS Windows/LDAP password.

Being open for all EECS users — even those who never intend to use login.eecs — increases our chance of being attacked by brute-force methods, or abuse by those with stolen credentials. In an effort to limit our attack surface, we will be restricting who can login on login.eecs.

Beginning Tuesday, August 11, SSH access to login.eecs will be restricted to members of a new LDAP group. Anyone who has used login.eecs recently has already been added to this group.

If you would like to utilize login.eecs, and have not yet been added to this access group, please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu to request login.eecs access.
