We will be upgrading the BWRC router at 8AM on Tuesday 9/12/17. An outage of approximately 10 minutes is expected.
The upgrade is intended to bring the router up to a vendor-supported software level, as well as to enable some new features.
Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions or concerns.

Routine Red Hat Linux operating system patches have been released which require system reboots. Starting at 6pm Thursday, Sep 7, IDSG will be patching and rebooting affected servers. The following services will experience brief outages of 15 minutes or less between 6pm and 7pm.
* Personal and Project web services (people.eecs, apps.eecs, and all IRIS-hosted project websites)
* Department mailing list services (lists.eecs.berkeley.edu)
* Department ftp server (ftp.eecs / ftp.cs.berkeley.edu)
* Department jabber/xmpp service (jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu)
* IRIS website (iris.eecs.berkeley.edu)

The departmental authenticating outgoing smtp server gateway.eecs will be down for a needed reboot to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.
Though the scheduled downtime is 7:15am to 7:45am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

There will be a power shutdown for Soda Hall on Tuesday August 29th, scheduled for 3 to 7 AM. The shutdown and short notice are due to an urgent need for the campus high voltage team to repair equipment which was damaged in June. It is also possible that the outage could be extended if difficult circumstances are encountered.
We have arranged with campus facilities to receive generator power for 288 and 290 Soda so that we can continue to provide IT services to the outside world while Soda is dark. As such, no interruptions to IRIS services outside Soda Hall are expected at this time. However, due to many electrical load variables it is possible that we may need to shut down some services without notice during the maintenance window.
Power to research server rooms 420A and 287 will be lost and the sysadmins of those rooms are coordinating a full system shutdown.
For sysadmins of machines in 340 Soda, you will also need to shut down your machines. We recommend doing so before midnight, or 2AM if you feel like cutting it close.

Tomorrow, 8/23, between 12-1PM we will be performing tests of our new border router (specifically the BGP links to campus).
We have two uplinks, and will use the secondary link for this test, so no network interruptions are expected. In the event there is a connectivity issue, the test will be aborted immediately.
Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions.

After a long preparation, we are almost ready to begin providing IPv6 service. We originally planned to be ready by the end of August, but due to various delays we are currently about one month behind schedule. Our remaining steps are:
* complete replacement of existing border router
* request IPv6 blocks from campus
* configure IPv6 routing
* begin providing IPv6 connectivity
We anticipate that in the best case scenario we may be ready for early deployments as soon as late September, although October may be a more reasonable estimate if further complications arise.
Our plan, once the routing core has been enabled for IPv6, is to start with small deployments on our backend infrastructure networks and also for research groups which have been waiting some time for IPv6. These initial deployments will be barebones “plumbing only” and likely will not include automatic IP address assignments (DHCP/SLAAC) or name services (DNS). When those services are ready, we will begin a large-scale deployment of IPv6 to the public production networks.
If you are interested in IPv6, please take a moment to fill out the survey linked here. This will help us gauge interest and let us know who to reach out to for the initial deployments.
