EECS-Secure Authentication Unavailable 10/11/17

The authentication service for EECS-Secure was unavailable from 00:17 to 13:35 today. This was caused by a bad update that was automatically pushed to our servers by the vendor. We did not notice the issue or receive any trouble reports, so it went undetected until an alert was received from the vendor at 13:25.

The alert included a fix which we applied and service was restored by 13:35. During the outage, machines were unable to connect to EECS-Secure.

October 2017 Windows Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, October 10th, 2017.

PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, October 11th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, October 11th, depending on additional software updates.

Soda 5F South Network Issue

We are currently experiencing brief, intermittent losses of connectivity to Soda’s 5B network closet which serves the south side of the fifth floor.

The outages last approximately one minute and are spaced several hours apart. They appeared to be due to a fault in the 5B switch’s primary uplink to the BDF, so the primary link has been temporarily disabled in favor of the backup link.

As the issue is not currently severe we plan to investigate further on Monday. If things escalate, we will intervene sooner.

Brief outages to Mailing Lists, IRIS Website, Jabber Wed Sep 20 6pm

Routine Red Hat Linux operating system patches have been released which require system restarts. Starting at 6pm Wednesday, Sep 20, IDSG will be patching and rebooting affected servers. The following services will experience brief outages of 10 minutes or less between 6pm and 7pm.

* Department mailing list services (lists.eecs.berkeley.edu)
* Department jabber/xmpp service (jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu)
* IRIS website (iris.eecs.berkeley.edu)

NIS issues Tuesday September 19, 2017

The NIS server rhea had some unexpected issues from possibly as early as 07:27 am to 08:21 am this morning after a new NIS master went in to production this morning.

Network Border Maintenance, 9/18/17

Between 12 and 1PM on Monday 9/18, we will be migrating the department routing core’s uplinks to our new edge router. No interruption is expected but a brief outage is possible if we encounter a problem.
