cronus.cs remains down after neighborhood power outage

A power outage to Soda Hall which began around 12:30pm on June 21, 2017 took out many IRIS services.

At about 3:00pm, power was restored to Soda Hall and staff are bringing up network equipment now. The power conditioner in the main Soda machine room had problems recovering, and campus electricians required additional time to get it back online. Our IRIS staff then were able to begin bringing infrastructure online, including dhcp, fileservice, DNS, etc.

By 6:50pm, most IRIS services were restored.

cronus.cs, one of our DNS and NIS servers, remains down at this time. This may cause delays or timeouts for various machines and services.

New Procedure for Changing Unix Passwords and Shells

A new web page has been deployed to allow IRIS account holders to change their Unix password or shell. This page replaces the old procedure of logging into the server passwd.cs.berkeley.edu.

The new page is available now [on the IRIS website](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/selfserve/nispasswd/). You may authenticate to this page using either your EECS Windows / LDAP password, or by using your CalNet passphrase.

gateway.eecs – downtime Tuesday June 20, 2017 07:15-07:45am

The departmental authenticating outgroup smtp server gateway.eecs will be down for a needed reboot to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.

Though the scheduled downtime is 7:15am to 7:45am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

Network Border Maintenance, 6/20/17 7AM

We will be performing maintenance at the EECS network border at 7AM on Tues. June 20th. There may be a brief loss of connectivity between EECS and outside networks at this time.

If a loss of connectivity occurs, we expect it will likely last less than five minutes. In this event, the following traffic paths would be interrupted:

* EECS to campus networks
* EECS to Internet
* EECS to Millennium research

The following will not be affected:

* Traffic within EECS networks
* Millennium research connectivity to campus/Internet
* Science DMZ
* Private networks in the EECS DMZ (CESR, DETER)

“EECS” in this case refers to all wired and wireless production nets, all server and machine rooms, and all private networks not otherwise mentioned above.

Partial network outage to Cory 1st floor

A brief campus power outage resulted in one of our switches losing configuration upon reboot. Part of Cory Hall first floor remains offline, including some machines in 165 Cory.

Staff are working to restore network access.

June 2017 Windows Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, June 13th, 2017.

PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, June 14th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, June 14th, depending on additional software updates.

Campus Wireless Networks Unavailable, 6/7/17

Campus wireless networks (AirBears2, eduroam, CalVisitor) were unavailable for a period this morning due to an issue with authentication load balancers. At the direction of campus wifi admins we have reconfigured these networks to bypass the load balancers for now.

All networks are once again available for use within EECS.

Brief outages to various IRIS services, May 30, 6pm

Routine Red Hat Linux operating system patches have been released which require system reboots. Starting at 6pm Wednesday, May 31, IDSG will be patching and rebooting affected servers. The following services will experience brief outages of 10 minutes or less between 6pm and 7pm.

* Personal and Project web services (people.eecs, apps.eecs, and all IRIS-hosted project websites)
* Department mailing list services (lists.eecs.berkeley.edu)
* Department wiki service (wiki.eecs.berkeley.edu)
* Department ftp server (ftp.eecs / ftp.cs.berkeley.edu)
* Department jabber/xmpp service (jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu)
* IRIS website (iris.eecs.berkeley.edu)
