EECS Mailing Lists Unavailable, Thurs. Dec. 12

December 12, 2024 by Derek Calderon

Since some time last night, our mailing list server lists.eecs has been offline due to an issue with the system. Staff are beginning to investigate and an update will be posted here when available.

While the list server is offline, some emails will be delayed, and any messages sent through an EECS mailing list will not be delivered on time.

Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions.

Update: Dec 12, 9am, Rob McNicholas

After installing the most recent patches, this machine would not boot up. We reverted to a previous kernel and the system is now up.

IT Support During Winter 2024 Energy Curtailment

December 10, 2024 by Lars Rohrbach

Due to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Tuesday, December 24 to Wednesday, January 1, reopening on Thursday, January 2, 2024. Additionally, much of campus is on reduced support for January 2-3.

All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis. You may wish to turn off any workstations or printers in your office, to help with energy savings.

The IRIS Helpdesk office will be closed Monday, December 23 through Friday, January 3, re-opening on Monday, January 6. If you need assistance between January 2-3, please email help@eecs, and we may be able to schedule an appointment with you. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs during the campus closure period, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until at least January 2.

Requests for network support or new IRIS accounts that are received after noon Tuesday, December 17 may not be processed until January 6, 2024.

During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (for details, see the Instructional website). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until at least January 2.

Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:

Research / Staff Computing Environment: help@eecs

DNS disruption for eecs.berkeley.edu, Nov 19

November 20, 2024 by Lars Rohrbach

Tuesday afternoon and evening, November 19, we had a disruption of DNS resolution for the eecs.berkeley.edu domain on the campus nameservers. This meant that many systems outside of the EECS network were temporarily unable to resolve *.eecs.berkeley.edu hostnames — so people may have been temporarily unable to reach EECS websites or deliver email to some @eecs.berkeley.edu addresses.

NetApp Fileserver Maintenance, Saturday November 30, 2024

November 13, 2024 by Lars Rohrbach

We are scheduling a NetApp ONTAP upgrade, to apply a necessary update to our NetApp fileserver, from 8am to 12pm on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

All Home directories and Project shares (CIFS/SMB and NFS) may experience disconnection during the update that may cause data loss on active, open files.  Please close your open files and save them before Saturday morning. Services (e.g. webservice) that depend on this storage will also be temporarily down or unresponsive.

When maintenance is completed, NFS clients should automatically resume normal operation, but a reboot should help if they don’t. CIFS clients (such as Windows and MacOS) may need to remount filesystems, or simply be rebooted.

Cory 3F Network Offline, Thursday 11/14 early AM

November 12, 2024 by Derek Calderon

On Thursday, November 14th, between 6:30 and 9:45 AM, Cory Hall third floor wired and wireless networks will be offline due to electrical work being performed at the main service panel. Facilities is performing this work in order to restore electrical power to the Cory Hall Helpdesk.

Facilities is reporting that the west side of the third floor (which includes the network closet) will be without power from 6:30 – 9:30 AM. The network devices, particularly the wi-fi APs, will need some time to boot up after power is restored. We typically expect network connectivity to be restored within 10-20 minutes after power returns to the network closet.

Update 11/14 9:36AM: This work was apparently completed without any interruption to the network. Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions.

EECS Network Maintenance, 10/31 1-5PM

October 30, 2024 by Derek Calderon

On Thursday, October 31 between 1 and 5PM, we will be performing network link migrations in preparation for retiring an old router. This maintenance will affect one of the EECS network’s paths to Campus and the Internet, however we expect no interruption as we have another redundant path which is able to handle our full traffic volume.

Update 10/31 16:22: This work has been completed without any significant interruption to network traffic. Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any issues.
