EECS Mailing Lists emergency maintenance May 15, 7pm

May 15, 2025 by Rob McNicholas

The EECS Mailing List server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu is experiencing some problems after recent patching. At this time, scheduled tasks such as syncing list membership from external sources, sending reminder emails, or building archives, are not working. This server will be taken down tonight, Thursday May 15, at 7pm in order to try to diagnose the problem or revert back to a pre-patched version. Total downtime should be less than 2 hours. During this time, any mail sent to a list on lists.eecs.berkeley.edu or lists.simons.berkeley.edu will be delayed but no mail should be lost.

Please send any questions to help@eecs.

gateway.eecs upgrade

February 12, 2025 by Rob McNicholas

The IRIS authenticated SMTP relay gateway.eecs.berkeley.edu was upgraded this morning to a new operating system and mail software. The suggested configuration for the new server is:

name: gateway.eecs.berkeley.edu
port: 587
Encryption: STARTTLS
Authentication method: normal password
Username: your IRIS username (e.g. robm)
Password: your IRIS password

The old server apparently accepted email addresses for the username (e.g. robm@eecs.berkeley.edu) but this does not work on the new servers. If you are having problems authenticating, please check your Username configuration.

Web services upgrade, Friday July 5

July 3, 2024 by Rob McNicholas

IRIS-provided web services will be migrated to new Red Hat 9 servers on Friday, July 5th beginning at 10am. This will affect people.eecs, www2.eecs, and all the project websites hosted by IRIS. This should be transparent to most people, but users of apps.eecs.berkeley.edu might have to upgrade their code due to new versions of the supported languages. These people have been previously contacted.

As usual, please send any questions or concerns to help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

lists.eecs.berkeley.edu mail delivery issues

April 26, 2024 by Rob McNicholas

We have had reports of some undelivered mail sent via mailing lists on lists.eecs.berkeley.edu. Upon investigating, Google / bMail is refusing to accept some email sent from lists.eecs.berkeley.edu, beginning early on April 24th . We believe this is due to some changes made at the campus level intended to improve mail reliability and reduce spam. We are working with the people running this project to try to determine the cause of the problem and arrive at a resolution.

If you believe you have been impacted by this, any reports of definitely missed emails would be helpful to us in assessing the scope of this problem.

In the meantime, we suggest that any important or time critical emails be also sent directly to individuals instead of relying entirely on mailing lists. For important emails that have been sent already, you may wish to follow up with a phone call or email sent directly to their bMail account.

This article will be updated as we learn more.

Update April 29, 4pm: This problems seems to have resolved itself. There was no definitive diagnosis unfortunately. We will continue to monitor delivery rates on select mailing lists.

LDAP server upgrade, Monday Apr 29, 6pm

April 25, 2024 by Rob McNicholas

The IRIS LDAP servers (ldap.eecs.berkeley.edu) provide usernames and passwords for many EECS applications and servers. On Monday, April 29th at 6pm, we will be upgrading these servers and their related load balancers to Red Hat 8. We plan to gracefully fail the old servers over to the new with no loss of service. As part of this upgrade, new SSL certificates have also been installed. Those accessing our servers programmatically might notice the certificate upgrade, but most users should not see any changes.

Update April 29 6:20pm: The server switchover has been completed. The only issue so far was with a server that was trying to use an older security protocol, TLS 1.1. The new servers require a minimum of TLS 1.2. Please check this setting if you are having problems.

Anonymous ftp access ending May 1, 2024

April 3, 2024 by Rob McNicholas

For many years the Department has operated an anonymous ftp server at ftp.eecs.berkeley.edu and ftp.cs.berkeley.edu. Before web sites, this was how software and papers were distributed to the public. Since web sites are the preferred way to distribute digital assets these days, no new content has been published on our ftp servers for over a decade. We will be ending support for anonymous ftp access effective May 1, 2024. After that time, the current contents of our ftp archive will continue to be made available via a web page at https://ftp.eecs.berkeley.edu and https://ftp.cs.berkeley.edu/.

Update: May 1, 1pm: The ftp server has been shut down. The replacement web page is up at https://ftp.eecs.berkeley.edu

Beginning around 11am today, July 14th, the network in Cory Hall began to exhibit some problems. At this time the network is unstable, with intermittent connectivity. Network staff are currently investigating the problem, and this article will be updated as we learn more.

Update 7/14 12:11: Networks on floors B,1,2,3,5 should now be stabilizing. 4th floor networks are still offline while we pinpoint the exact cause of the issue.

Update 7/14 12:30: We have isolated the root cause and have re-enabled networking on the 4th floor. Wired networks are online, and wireless will be back online shortly.
