IRIS network staff are investigating some network interruptions that began just before 6:30pm.
Update: the cause was identified and all networks were stabilized around 8pm.
Various Linux servers will be down for patching and needed reboots to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.
login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.
The departmental dhcp server is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.
cronus one of the departmental DNS and time servers is scheduled for downtime from 6:45am-7:00am.
rhea the other departmental DNS and time server is scheduled for downtime from 7:00am-7:15am.
The departmental authenticating outgoing SMTP server gateway.eecs is scheduled for downtime from 7:30am to 7:45am.
We expect actual downtimes to be less than scheduled.
[Read more…] about Various Linux servers (login, dhcp, DNS, SMTP, NTP) downtime Tuesday December 20, 2022 06:30-07:45 amBetween 12 and 4PM on Thursday, December 29th, we will be replacing the access switches which serve the second floor of Cory Hall. During this time, there will be significant disruptions to the wired and wireless networks on the second floor, the second floor mezzanine, and possibly also the Cory Hall roof.
Update 12/29 16:30: This maintenance is complete. Please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any network issues.
Between 11AM and 4PM on Wednesday, December 28th, we will be performing maintenance on the Soda Hall core router. Most Soda Hall wired networks will not be affected by this maintenance due to redundant links. However, Soda Hall and BWRC wi-fi, as well as BWRC’s uplink to the outside world, will experience a number of interruptions during this time.
Update 12/28 15:15: This work has been completed and all networks are online. Please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any issues.
Between 12 and 1PM on Tuesday, December 27th, we will be performing maintenance on the Soda Hall root switch. All Soda Hall wired and wireless networks will experience interruptions during this time, except for most of 290 Soda, which will remain online. (Some Instructional systems in 290 will be affected)
Update 12/27 2PM: This maintenance was completed and all networks should be back online. Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have questions or notice any issues.
Between 1 and 2PM on Tuesday, December 27th, we will be performing a firmware upgrade on one of our two redundant border routers which connect the EECS networks to Campus and the Internet. No interruption is expected, as the other border router which is not being upgraded will be able to handle all network traffic during this maintenance.
Update 2:15P: This upgrade has been completed and both border routers are back online. Please email us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any network issues.
We are investigating an apparent issue with our VMware infrastructure, which is affecting various IRIS systems, including access to login.eecs, rt.eecs (our ticketing system), and lists.eecs (our maillist server).
[Read more…] about Dec 14: Service interruption (login.eecs, lists.eecs)This week, we will be performing network maintenance to complete the decommissioning of our old border firewalls. The work will be performed in two stages; the first between 11AM-12PM on Tuesday the 13th, and the second between 11AM-12PM on Wednesday the 14th.
We do not expect this work to have any impact to network connectivity, as the vast majority of traffic flows were migrated to our new firewall earlier in the year.
Please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions, or if you notice any unusual network behavior.
Update 12/14: This work has been completed without any network impact. Please email us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any issues.
Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, December 13th, 2022. PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, December 14th, at 3:00 am.
WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, December 14th, depending on additional software updates.
[Read more…] about December Windows Server PatchingDue to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Friday, December 23 to Monday, January 2, reopening on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis.
The IRIS Helpdesk office will be closed Wednesday, December 21 through Wednesday, January 4, re-opening on January 5. If you need assistance between December 21-22 or January 3-4, please email help@eecs, and we may be able to schedule an appointment with you. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs during the campus closure period, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until January 3.
Requests for network support or new IRIS accounts that are received after 5pm December 21 may not be processed until January 3, 2023.
During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (for details, see the Instructional website). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until January 3.
Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:
