Computing Support During 2009/2010 Winter Break

December 10, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

Due to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Wednesday, December 23 to Wednesday, January 6, reopening on Thursday, January 7, 2010.

All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis. IRIS staff will be taking advantage of the holiday to do maintenance on some systems which will result in scattered outages, but any such downtime will be separately announced and posted on the IRIS website.

The EECS Department’s Computing Helpdesk will be closed beginning December 23rd, and will reopen on January 7th. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (2-7777) or emailed to help@eecs, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until January 7th.

During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (imail.eecs, inst.eecs, cory.eecs, mamba.eecs and fileservice.eecs). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs over the break. If you are unable to contact inst@eecs, you can leave a message at 643-6141. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until January 7th.

We recommend that all desktop computers be shutdown during the Energy
Curtailment Period. If your Windows computer needs to stay on during the break,
we recommend that you check with your system administrator to ensure that
Automatic Updates are enabled with the option ‘Automatically download the
updates and install them on the schedule that I specify’, with a daily update
schedule.

Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please
use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:

– Instructional Computing Environment: inst@eecs
– Research / Staff Computing Environment: help@eecs

Enjoy your holiday break!

Mathematica has expired, temporarily

December 1, 2009 by IRIS Staff

The EECS Mathematica license expired as of yesterday. Despite repeated efforts to have the license extended with UCB Technology Acquisition & Sales, we have been so far unsuccessful. We expect resolution very soon. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Cisco Wireless Controllers reboot on Dec 5

November 30, 2009 by Janet Shu

New web-authentication certificate is installed in cisco wireless controllers and this requires to reboot the wireless controllers to take effect. The device will be rebooted on Dec 5 at 9:30am. The users in Soda,Cory and CITRIS will lose wireless connection during the reboot, it should take less than 5 mins for each ap controller to reboot and the services should be restored within a short outage. Since 3 ap controllers will require to be rebooted, the outage will be from 9:30am to 10:00am.

Widespread service disruption due to UPS failure

November 21, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Last evening about 21:26 there was a power failure in the main EECS server room in Soda Hall. The UPS held up some systems until about 22:00 at which time staff shut the room down completely. Many EECS services were disrupted as a result. The problem was found to be in the UPS which fried the high voltage output terminal block. The terminal block was bypassed and the UPS has been removed from service until further notice. Most EECS computing services have been restored as of 03:15 this morning with the exception of the IRIS web server, which was restored around 10:15am Sunday.

Thanks to the staff who came in early Sunday morning to deal with this issue.

Router changes

November 20, 2009 by IRIS Staff

I will be disabling several 1Gbit Ethernet links between EECS and campus and Millennium and campus at 0830 on Friday. The traffic was previously migrated to 10Gbit links.

This is stage 2 of the EECS border upgrade project.

During the same maintenance window, I will be installing new line cards into the Soda Hall core router.

This is in preparation for upgrading the edge switches in Soda Hall.

No disruption is expected from either change.

(This work was completed without incident.)
