New SSL Certificate for gateway.EECS

November 16, 2009 by Mark Kraitchman

The current 1024 bit SSL certificate for gateway.EECS.Berkeley.ED will expire soon.

The current Entrust SSL certificate is being replaced by a 2048 bit Entrust SSL certificate that utilizes the Entrust 2048 bit L1B chain root certificate.

Our testing suggests that thunderbird, pine, Outlook, Microsoft Windows Mail (replacement for Outlook Express) and Apple Mail should be able to use the 2048 bit SSL certificate on gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU for outgoing smtp service using STARTTLS without any problems.

If you have problems sending email using gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU with the new SSL certifciate please contact the IRIS help desk (help@eecs, 395 Cory M-F 9:30am-5pm, 642-7777).

https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/15-faq/15-software/#Email has documentation on configuring various mail user agents.

Note, if your mail user agent can not handle 2048 bit SSL certificates, the outgoing smtp server on calmail.Berkeley.EDU still uses a 1024 bit SSL certificate.

wireless network for EECS-Secure

November 14, 2009 by Janet Shu

We would switch to use old RADIUS servers due to the certificate issues on new RADIUS servers.

If you have XP and use EECS-Secure, please make sure your configuration on your wireless client is as following link:
https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/15-faq/05-windows_2000/xp-eecs-secure.html

If you have vista and use EECS-Secure, please make sure your configuration on your client is as following link:
https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/15-faq/05-windows_2000/vista-eecs-secure.html

Other issues, please contact with networks@eecs or help@eecs.

Thanks,

Emergency router reload 5pm

November 9, 2009 by IRIS Staff

The main EECS border router is stuck in a state that prevents either viewing or saving its configuration.

While monitoring the route table during the transition, a command used to examine the hardware routing table status caused the router a fair bit of consternation, leaving it in a state where it is impossible to save or view the configuration.

I will be rebooting the router at 5pm. All external connectivity to EECS will be interrupted, hopefully for a very brief period.

EECS network border upgrade

November 9, 2009 by IRIS Staff

On Monday morning at 7:00-7:45am, I will update the configuration on the EECS border routers to enable BGP peering with campus and bring new 10Gbps links into production.

Subsequently, I will enable direct connectivity between EECS and the Millennium research network at 10Gbps, allowing the research systems to use the 10Gbps uplinks as well.

I have spent considerable time testing the individual changes, and no discernible disruption of connectivity is planned. However given the complexity of the changes, I’m reserving a 45 minute maintenance window.

This work will affect all networks maintained by IRIS, including Soda, Cory, Sutardja Dai, BWRC, & BID, not including AirBears.

This upgrade has been funded in part by the RAD Lab and DETER projects.

EECS border route flapping

November 4, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Following IST’s scheduled move of inr-201, the EECS border router experienced frequent route flaps affecting all outbound traffic, resulting in minor packet loss. Pending further investigation, traffic has been diverted to inr-202.

Mailing List Messages Delayed

November 4, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The Department’s mailing list server, lists.eecs.berkeley.edu, ran out of memory last night around 12:45am. The service was restarted at 8:45am, and all delayed email has now been delivered.

More memory has recently been purchased and installed. The server will be reconfigured later this week to use the new memory. We hope this will resolve this problem.
