Network Maintenance for Edge Router

January 21, 2010 by Janet Shu

Due to IPmc errors on 10G4x module and it requires to reboot this module on edge router in order to fix the issue.

The edge router is the device for all incoming/outgoing EECS network traffic to campus network. We will schedule network maintenance window between 8:00AM to 9:00AM on Jan 21(Thursday) and use this time for rebooting and troubleshooting the issue. If everything goes ok, you will not experience network outage.

If you have any concerns, please contact with help@eecs or networks@eecs

Enhancements to Device Registration Process

January 19, 2010 by Rob McNicholas

The [IRIS Device Activation form](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/db/network/) allows IRIS account holders to register a network device for use on our networks. Previously all requests were processed by hand with a turnaround time of up to a day. Over the last few months we have been rolling out incremental improvements to automate some of the process, and most requests will now be automatically approved and inserted into our database. Our DHCP server now refreshes itself from our database at regular intervals, with the net result being most new systems will be supported on our networks within thirty minutes or less.

The following are the requirements for automatic approval:

* Host is a DHCP client with dynamic address
* Standard equipment (e.g. laptop, desktop, server, phone/pda)
* If wired host, must be using an active network port on an IRIS-supported network.

Please note that if your request is automatically approved, you will no longer receive a second email telling you when your request has been processed. Please read the on-screen messages and your email copies carefully, as they will indicate whether your request was automatically approved and is immediately ready for use.

Wireless Network Outage from 8:30AM to 9:30AM on Jan 10

January 10, 2010 by Janet Shu

EECS Wireless AP controllers will be upgraded with the newer version of firmware on Jan 10 (Sun) at 8:30AM.

We will reboot 3 AP controllers one by one. We will schedule the wireless network downtime for about 1 hour. Each controller will take about 20 mins or less to reboot. You may experience that the wireless network will be down for about 20 mins during 8:30AM-9:30AM. This upgrade will not affect wireless users in BWRC. During this time, the wired network will still work.

If you have questions, please contact with networks@eecs

Unplanned outage of some IRIS Services

December 29, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The Storage Area Network (SAN) that hosts the virtual machine images for www.eecs, buffy.eecs and lists.eecs briefly stopped serving the storage around 1:45am. The virtual machines stopped at that time and were restarting this morning around 9:45am.

The SAN software that is causing this problem is due to be retired in the next few weeks.

December 28th Shutdown

December 28, 2009 by IRIS Staff

IMAP/mail, home/project, Windows services (AD/WINS/printing), LDAP/NIS/DNS, DHCP and most other IDSG and IMG services will be affected. We will try to keep some basic network services running (DHCP, DNS/NIS), possibly in a reduced capacity.

While EECS-Secure, EECS-Guest and EECS-Open wireless LANS will be out of service during this time, the EECS and AirBears wireless LANS will remain operational during the outage.

The reason for this extended downtime is multi fold. The first is to repair the UPS that failed a couple of weeks back. The repaired unit will be placed back on line and extensive testing must be done to ensure it’s operation before we can depend on the UPS again. The second is to move data around which will allow us to remove from service a piece of software used to manage storage. This software is no longer under development and we need to remove our dependency on it. Lastly, some routine maintenance will be done which can only be done when systems are down. These are the kind of things that can only be done between semesters and we ask for you understanding during this disruption in service.

While the stated outage is from 10:00AM to 9:00PM, it may not take that long. This is a worst case scenario. If possible, services will be brought up sooner than 9:00 PM.

EECS Website, Mailing Lists and IM services down since 10:30PM

December 21, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Starting around 10:30PM tonight, the EECS website, Mailing List and IM services (aka www.eecs, lists.eecs and Jabber) went down due to a problem with EECS Storage.

While EECS Storage is back up and most affected services — including access to home directories, project storage, Software Warehouse, and IMAP — recovered, Maillists and IM stayed down due to a backend database server that had not yet recovered from the storage outage. The Xen cluster that provides these services lost all contact with the SAN and and to be restarted.

Staff are working now to bring these remaining services back up.

In the meanwhile, if you are still having problems accessing your home directory, project storage, Software Warehouse, or IMAP, please contact the EECS Helpdesk.
