Exchange front-end server OWA disk failure

February 4, 2014 by Lars Rohrbach

We are rebuilding OWA after a disk failure. Exchange service through OWA (e.g. web access, or mobile client access) will be unavailable in the meantime.

Access via Outlook directly to FONTUS from machines on the EECS network may remain available, unless configured to access OWA using RPC-over-HTTP.

Email and URL forwarding for closed accounts

January 24, 2014 by Lars Rohrbach

IRIS previously offered courtesy email forwarding and URL redirect service for
up to one year after the closure of an IRIS account. We are removing
the “one year” limitation now, so that you can expect forwarding to continue
into the forseeable future after your account is closed, unless you request
otherwise.

Many members of our community publish papers and collaborate with others, with
their @eecs.berkeley.edu or @cs.berkeley.edu email address
serving as their primary contact. This
step will ensure that working relationships can continue well after leaving
the Berkeley campus.

Please see our
FAQ for IRIS Account Closing

Department LDAP Upgrade, Thu Jan 16, 7am

January 15, 2014 by Rob McNicholas

On Thursday, January 16th at 7:00 AM, IRIS will be switching the department’s LDAP infrastructure over to our new OpenLDAP servers so that we can retire the old iPlanet servers.

This new system has been designed for high reliability, with two front-end proxy servers that are distributing the queries over a cluster of three back-end servers. The servers are distributed across Soda, Sutardja-Dai and Warren Halls.

For the most part we hope that this transition will be transparent, other than faster queries. However, there is one notable change to mention: We are taking this opportunity to retire the current separate LDAP password and instead passing all authentication through to our Windows Active Directory servers.

**Beginning Thursday, January 16th, 2014 at 7am, wherever you previously used your EECS LDAP password, you will now use your EECS Windows AD password. The current LDAP passwords will be archived and retired. The means you will have one less password to remember!**

Most people will not be affected by this change. But based on recent logs, any people who have been using their LDAP password will receive a second email notification after this with more information.

Here are the answers to some questions we are anticipating:

Q. What is my Windows password?

A. We can’t tell you what your password is, but your Windows password is the same password you use to login to a Windows workstation in EECS, map a network drive from an EECS fileserver, or authenticate to the EECS-Secure or EECS-Open wireless networks.

You can check now to see if you know your current Windows password by making a Remote Desktop Connection to winterm.eecs.berkeley.edu. Login as username@eecs.berkeley.edu to see if you know your password.

Q. I don’t know my Windows password. How do I reset it?

A. Please visit the helpdesk in 395 Cory with a picture ID.

If you are off-campus and cannot come in person, send an email to help@eecs.berkeley.edu and we will send you a special link where you can change your password.

Please direct any other questions to IRIS at help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

EECS Network Scheduled Outage on Jan. 11 2014

January 11, 2014 by Derek Calderon

We will be having a large scheduled outage of the EECS network in order to physically relocate some core devices as Phase One of a project to overhaul the EECS network core. This maintenance will occur between 10AM and 6PM on Saturday, January 11, 2014. We do not anticipate the downtime to last for the full eight hours, but extra time has been allotted in case of complications.

Expected impacts of this outage include:

  • Internet connectivity to all EECS Wired buildings* will be offline
  • Soda Hall wired and wireless networking will be entirely offline
  • BWRC will be isolated from EECS and unable to access the Internet or EECS network resources
  • Wireless networking in EECS Airspace** will be unavailable (the networks will continue to be visible in some locations, however the underlying network services will be offline)

EECS Wired buildings other than Soda Hall and BWRC should retain connectivity and access to EECS network resources (filers, AD, etc.), but to reiterate, the Internet connection will be unavailable.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this maintenance will cause. For any questions or concerns about the maintenance, please email networks@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Thank you,
IRIS IDSG Network Group

*EECS Wired buildings are Soda, Cory, and Sutardja Dai Halls, and the BWRC

**EECS Airspace includes Soda, Cory, Sutardja Dai, Calvin, and Blum Halls, as well as the Sibley Auditorium, Hearst Memorial Mining Building, and BWRC

Update Department MatLab License Servers

January 7, 2014 by IRIS Staff

On January 7th, 2014, the EECS MatLab license server will be updated. This change will take effect at 3am when the EECS DNS servers reload. This is the first step in a multi step process to reorganize our MatLab licenses servers.

The department is running two MatLab license servers, one that supports MatLab through version 2011, and a new one that will support old and newer versions of MatLab. This is the first step to retire the old server.

If you experience any difficulty after the update, please do not hesitate to contact us at help@eecs. We are prepared to resolve licensing issues quickly.
