IRIS Network Policy change: Local Switches

October 2, 2009 by IRIS Staff

We’ve relaxed the portion of the [IRIS Network Policy](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/30-policies/network-policy/) that governs use of local switches on the IRIS network.

You may now use almost any model of unmanaged Ethernet switch to connect multiple registered devices to any single network jack on the IRIS network. Additionally, local switches no longer have to be registered by serial number to a specific network jack’s Cable ID.

The [Helpdesk](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/help/) has [recommended models](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/30-policies/network-policy/best-practices.html#recommended-switches) of 5-port switches available for sale, and we encourage you to choose these; they’re known to work well.

Please review the [Best Practices](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/30-policies/network-policy/best-practices.html#local-switches) for use of switches. Routers (including NAT,) managed switches (anything with it’s own MAC address,) and Ethernet hubs are still prohibited.

Soda 2nd Floor Network Outage

September 23, 2009 by IRIS Staff

A switch failure disrupted networks on the Soda 2nd floor.

After seeing an alert at 11:20, network administrators discovered a failed management module in the 2nd floor switch. The module was swapped and the configuration reloaded. The switch was returned to service at 11:53am. Instructional support staff had to reboot several servers which had become stuck due to disrupted NFS traffic. All 2nd floor Instructional Labs were operational as of 12:30.

September 21, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The web interface to the Department’s mailing list server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu is unavailable. There is a problem authenticating against our LDAP servers over SSL. This problem is currently being investigated, and we hope to have the web server available soon.

Mail delivery to lists hosted on lists.eecs is not affected. No mail has been delayed or lost.

If you need assistance managing your list during this outage, please send your requests to help@eecs and staff will make them for you.

Mathematica 7 online seminar

September 16, 2009 by IRIS Staff

The following online seminar invitation is extended to the EECS community.

Note that Mathematica 7 is now available on WINSWW, MACSWW, our Linux SWW, and on CD at the Helpdesk for loan.

—-

Mathematica has changed a lot over the past two years, and one thing I’ve noticed is that faculty often don’t realize all of the fields that it can be applied to and all of the amazing things that can be done with it. So I’d like to invite you to a free, online seminar called “Overview of Mathematica for Education,” where we illustrate Mathematica’s applicability in a number of different areas, from incorporating Mathematica into the classroom to parallel computing. Because Mathematica is available on campus to use for teaching and research, this seminar will help you better understand how to apply this versatile tool to your projects.

You can register for an upcoming session here:
http://url.wolfram.com/129U9-U/

Whether you’ve never used Mathematica before or have been using it for 20+ years, you’re sure to find this seminar beneficial, and perhaps even enlightening. During the seminar you can ask your own questions and get answers from the presenter or through the interactive chat.

If you’ve already attended “S01: An Overview of Mathematica for Education,” check out some of the other free seminars that are available to you: http://url.wolfram.com/1fVh3f6/

If you have questions, let me know. Otherwise, I look forward to “seeing” you there!

Sincerely,

Jamie Peterson
