Discount MacOSX Leopard Licenses Are Available

August 27, 2009 by Lars Rohrbach

Apple releases its newest OS, dubbed “Snow Leopard” (Mac OS X 10.6), on
Friday, August 28, 2009.

Various updates and improvements are advertised for Snow Leopard,
including faster wakeup and shutdown,
and using less disk space (due to only Intel Macs being supported).

The retail cost of Snow Leopard will be $169, but
the Helpdesk still has discounted licenses for Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) available,
which may reduce your cost of upgrading.
Note that if you purchased a machine with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 recently
(after June 8, which includes the new batch of Macbooks ordered
through the department), then you are eligible to
purchase a Snow Leopard upgrade for only $9.95 from Apple. See Apple’s
Up-to-Date program
details for more information.

The cost of upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard is only $29 (available
directly from Apple,
or from The Scholar’s Workstation).

The Helpdesk currently has $39 licenses for Leopard available,
and media available for $15 purchase or on loan. If you haven’t yet upgraded
your Mac to Leopard, or haven’t yet purchased a Leopard license, then
this upgrade path to Snow Leopard provides a sizable discount.

Please feel free to contact help@eecs for further information.

Fiber Optic Cutover

August 25, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Tuesday morning at 6:00 am, we are working with IST to move a number of optical circuits in Soda Hall to a different fiber cable. This work is to facilitate the move of IST network equipment from Evans to Sutardja Dai Hall. Because our routers are configured with redundant paths, only the following areas will experience a brief outage, hopefully only a minute or so each.

* DETER
* Cory General Classrooms
* EECS BID Center in HMMB
* BWRC

We are currently experiencing some problems with the AirBears Wireless LAN in both Soda and Cory. AirBears in Sutardja-Dai Hall is not affected at this time. All other EECS WLANs are not affected. IST has been notified of the issue.

The problem appeared to be a defective cable connecting the Access manager to a media converter. The cable was replaced.
