UPDATE
[2009-09-24 15:58:42 | Robert McNicholas]
Earlier I posted that no email sent through lists.eecs was delayed. However, that turns out to not be true. When the web interface crashed, it used up all available memory, and some mail delivery processes were affected. All mail has been queued up and is now being delivered, but it may arrive hours late. Now that I am aware of that possibility, I will keep the web server turned off until I discover the source of the problem. This should prevent future delays.
My sincere apologies for this ongoing problem.
UPDATE
[2009-09-28 22:51:11 | Robert McNicholas]
The web interface on [lists.eecs.berkeley.edu](lists.eecs.berkeley.edu) is once again available.
The underlying problem seems to have been a communication issue between lists.eecs and the department’s LDAP servers, which are used for checking usernames and passwords. Around 3pm today the LDAP servers were restarted due to a separate issue, and the lists.eecs server suddenly began working again.
I’m very sorry for this extended outage. Please report any lingering problems to help@eecs.
