Linux Server Patching, Jan 14th 9pm-10pm

A number of IRIS services will experience brief outages Thursday January 14th between 9pm and 10pm while they are restarted after patching. These include:

* www.eecs.berkeley.edu
* lists.eecs.berkeley.edu
* jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu
* wiki.eecs.berkeley.edu
* apps.eecs.berkeley.edu


We expect each service to be down for at most 10 minutes.

Various IRIS Services Down for patching, Wednesday, 6pm

Routine RedHat Linux operating system patches have been released which require system reboots. Starting at 6pm Wednesday, Dec 23, IDSG will be patching and rebooting affected servers. The following services will experience brief outages of 10 minutes or less between 6pm and 7pm.

Department web services (www.eecs, www.cs, apps.eecs, and all IRIS-hosted project websites)

Department mailing list services (lists.eecs.berkeley.edu)

Department wiki service (wiki.eecs.berkeley.edu)

Department ftp server (ftp.eecs / ftp.cs.berkeley.edu)

Department jabber/xmpp service (jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu)

IRIS website (iris.eecs.berkeley.edu)

Brief outage to numerous services, Thur Nov 12 7pm

IDSG’s Linux Servers will be patched and rebooted tonight starting at 7pm. Numerous services will experience brief outages between 7pm and 8pm, including:

web service from www.eecs.berkeley.edu, iris.eecs.berkeley.edu, apps.eecs.berkeley.edu, wiki.eecs.berkeley.edu

Mailing Lists from lists.eecs.berkeley.edu

Jabber/XMPP service from jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu

ftp service from ftp.eecs.berkeley.edu

No service should be down for more than 10 minutes.

During this maintenance window, the [Openfire](http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp) software on jabber.eecs will also be upgraded from version 3.9.3 to version 3.10.2, [which should fix some outstanding bugs](http://www.igniterealtime.org/builds/openfire/docs/latest/changelog.html).

Brief outage to Jabber, Mailing Lists

There are some operating system patches to be installed on our database server that require it be rebooted. jabber.eecs and lists.eecs both depend on this database server, and will likely experience brief outages Wednesday Oct 14th between 10pm and 10:15pm.

Campus recovering from major computing outage

EECS and the rest of campus is recovering from a major computing outage that started Friday evening around 6:15pm with a fire in the campus data center. Most critical services have been restored since about 1pm Saturday, Sep 19th. More information about the fire and its impact on campus IT systems can be found on the sites http://news.berkeley.edu/ and http://ucbsystems.org/

Most EECS / IRIS services are back to normal since around 1pm Saturday. Some servers may not have recovered and will need a reboot, and IRIS staff will be attending to those as they are discovered. You may report any remaining outages to the IRIS Helpdesk.

Brief outage to numerous services, Thur Aug 20

Jabber server misbehaving

Yesterday (April 29th) we installed the latest version of the Openfire server software that powers the department’s XMPP/jabber server. The new version seems somewhat buggy and has hung a couple times today. We are investigating, and will roll back to the previous version on Friday May 1st if we cannot determine the cause.

Jabber Server Maintenance, April 29 6pm

The department’s jabber/xmpp server jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu will be unavailable for approximately 30 minutes on April 29th, beginning at 6pm.
