The [department’s mailing list server](https://lists.eecs.berkeley.edu), [wiki server](https://wiki.eecs.berkeley.edu) and jabber/xmpp server will each be briefly unavailable tonight, January 29th, between 11pm and midnight.
An important security patch has been released which must be applied as soon as possible. We apologize for the short notice on this downtime.
The Department’s database server will be patched and rebooted Monday, November 17th at 6pm. Total downtime is expected to be less than 15 minutes. Applications that depend on this database will be down during this time. This includes our Jabber/XMPP server, jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu and our mailing list server, lists.eecs.berkeley.edu.
Mail sent to lists.eecs during this time will be held for later delivery. Delivery will be delayed but no mail will be lost.
The Department’s jabber/xmpp server jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu will be upgraded to the [latest release of Openfire](http://www.igniterealtime.org/builds/openfire/docs/latest/changelog.html) on Tuesday July 1, 2014 beginning at 6pm. The server will be shut down at 6pm and should be back up no later than 6:15pm.
Another [OpenSSL bug was announced today](http://www.openssl.org/news/secadv_20140605.txt), so many IRIS services will be briefly down for patching tonight starting at 6pm. This includes www.eecs, iris.eecs, lists.eecs, jabber.eecs, and apps.eecs. Each service will be down for a few minutes between 6pm and 7pm tonight, June 5, 2014.
The department’s jabber server (jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu) will be down for maintenance Thursday March 27th beginning at 9pm. It should be back up no later than 10pm.
During this outage the operating system will be patched and the Openfire XMPP server will be upgraded to [version 3.9.1](http://www.igniterealtime.org/builds/openfire/docs/latest/changelog.html) from the current version of 3.8.2. More disk space will also be added to this virtual machine, and the SSL certificate for jabber.eecs will be modified to try to work around a bug in iChat. These extra tasks will likely stretch out the downtime to close to one hour. [Read more…] about Jabber server downtime Thursday 3/27 9pm
One of the LDAP servers in our pair became unresponsive due to a filesystem problem. Some services (such as Jabber) had authentication problems during this time. The system is back online now after running fsck.
The current LDAP servers are old legacy systems slated to be replaced in the very near future. The configuration of these servers and the services that rely on it is non-optimal which results in problems with authentication to some (but not all) services that rely on LDAP.
The new LDAP system is in its final testing phases now and will completely replace the aging infrastructure we have now.
The problem with the system was detected by IT staff with one of our monitoring systems which alerted us. We are not aware of any impact to the community and have received no reports from anyone. If you experienced any authentication problems between 1-2am then please let us know by writing to firstname.lastname@example.org
