Network Problems Due to Services from cronus

September 22, 2008 by Lars Rohrbach

The multi-homed server cronus stopped providing NIS and DNS services. This has the potential to cause slowness or timeouts with various network traffic.

After rebooting, cronus is functioning normally again.

Initial Support for Windows Vista

September 17, 2008 by Lars Rohrbach

The EECS Department is pleased to announce initial support for
Windows Vista (Service Pack 1).

Windows Vista’s Service Pack 1 included fixes that made it possible
for Vista to access our department fileservers. We do not yet have
Vista DVDs available for loan from the Helpdesk, nor are we yet providing
network installation of Vista to the department, but we are actively working on this and hope to
offer both of these services soon. In the meantime, computers
shipped with Windows Vista should work fine in our environment, and
we will do our best to answer any questions related to using Vista
in EECS.

Over the coming weeks, we will be updating IRIS FAQ pages where appropriate for Vista users.

Department Webserver Upgrade, Monday, Sep 15

September 15, 2008 by Rob McNicholas

On Monday, Sep 15 at 6pm, IRIS will be performing an upgrade of the department web service on www.eecs.berkeley.edu and www.cs.berkeley.edu. The service will be moved onto a new cluster of redundant hardware, and the server software will be upgraded to Apache 2.2 (from 2.0).

We expect no downtime, but web services might be unstable around 6pm, but should stabilize no later than 6:15pm.

Most people will not notice any change, except that the web server will be much faster. And while the old server was very reliable, the new cluster gives us an even more robust and flexible environment.

This upgrade pertains to all [research websites](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/10-services/web-technotes.html#upgrade) that are hosted on this server.

The software upgrade will affect a small number of people who have put passwords on part of their personal website. We will be contacting those individuals directly by email to let them know [what they will need to change](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/10-services/web-technotes.html#upgrade).

If you would like access to the new server in advance to test out your personal website, please contact help@eecs and we will send you the necessary information.

Windows file service outage on home/project today

September 15, 2008 by IRIS Staff

There will be a brief (few seconds) CIFS outage at 6pm today. This will affect Windows clients and Samba users.

Most people won’t notice the brief outage, but there’s a possibility that some Windows applications with open files may get a bit confused. We recommend all affected users save any open files before 6pm and wait until a few minutes after 6pm to resume work.

The purpose of this brief outage is to resolve a problem that has prevented some Mac users from accessing our file servers. Once we have confirmed that problem has been resolved, a separate announcement will be made.

EECS Exchange Web Access Unavailable — Now Fixed

September 15, 2008 by Lars Rohrbach

Web access to the EECS Exchange server FONTUS via http:owa.eecs.berkeley.edu is currently unavailable, due to problems after the monthly Microsoft patching last Thursday. Users are able to login, but then only receive the error “HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable”.

Access to Exchange via Outlook, including connections using “RPC over HTTP”, continue to function correctly.

CUSG staff are actively working on a resolution.

File Server Slowness

September 9, 2008 by Lars Rohrbach

Access to EECS home directories on home.eecs was particularly slow for a while this morning. For users with mail or browser profiles in their home directories, this may have prevented their mail client or browser programs from functioning normally.

Access to project.eecs does not appear to have been affected.

Staff are investigating the cause. The likely culprit are slowdowns from a new backup combined with replication.

The symptoms disappeared at 9:30am on Tuesday, Sep 09. More should be known about the root cause by 9am Wednesday.
