We’re getting reports of widespread intermittent loss of network connectivity, including EECS-Secure being down. Staff are working to determine the source of the problem.

Matlab licensing for 2015
For 2015, Matlab licensing is being funded by a campus consortium that includes the College of Engineering. This year, Matlab licensing has been extended to include student use on personally-owned devices.
If you need to obtain Matlab in 2015, or to renew your Matlab license, please go to https://software.berkeley.edu/matlab and click on the relevant license request link. You will not be charged.
We recommend requesting Stand-Alone licenses when installing on laptops or personally-owned devices. Network licenses (where the client needs to contact the campus license server) may be used by machines on campus networks.
Wireless disruption in some areas
Some wireless access points remain in need of updated configuration, following last last night’s emergency maintenance.
When attempting to join a wireless network in an affected area, you may receive an error message such as “The authentication server is unresponsive.”
Service should be restored soon.

Disruption of EECS-Secure and EECS-Guest wireless
We have received reports of trouble accessing EECS-Secure and the EECS-Guest wireless networks. Staff are investigating and we hope to restore service shortly.
We encourage you to use other wireless networks in the meantime, such as EECS-PSK, AirBears, and CalVisitor.

Fileservice from cluster.eecs malfunctioning
After restoring other services following the network upgrade, file service from cluster.eecs and inst-fs.eecs to Soda and Cory clients continues to be severely degraded. This affects anyone who has project shares hosted on cluster.eecs, and servers that mount project shares from cluster.eecs.
Staff have been working with assistance from NetApp support to restore service for cluster.eecs.
We are currently working on various alternatives to make the filesystems accessible again. More updates will be provided on Monday.

IT Support During Winter 2014 Energy Curtailment
Due to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Wednesday, December 24 to Thursday, January 1st, reopening on Friday, January 2, 2014. Additionally, many staff are expected to be out until Monday, January 5th.
All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis. IRIS staff will be taking advantage of the holiday to do maintenance on some systems which will result in scattered outages, but any such downtime will be separately announced and posted on the IRIS website.
Of particular note are the previously-announced downtimes for the January 3-4 weekend (Network outage and Power outage).
The IRIS Helpdesk will be closed beginning Tuesday December 23, and will reopen on Monday January 5. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until January 5.
Requests for new IRIS accounts that are received after 3pm December 22 will be processed on January 5, 2014.
During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (imail.eecs, inst.eecs, cory.eecs, c199.eecs and fileservice.eecs). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. If you are unable to contact inst@eecs, you can leave a message at 510-643-6141. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until January 2.
We recommend that all desktop computers be shutdown during the Energy Curtailment Period. If your Windows computer needs to stay on during the break, we recommend that you check with your system administrator to ensure that Automatic Updates are enabled with the option “Automatically download the updates and install them on the schedule that I specify” with a daily update schedule.
Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:
Instructional Computing Environment: inst@eecs
Research / Staff Computing Environment: help@eecs
Enjoy your holiday break!
Mathematica License Server Update
The Berkeley campus has a site license for Mathematica. We strongly encourage Mathematica users to visit the Campus Software Central website for information on obtaining a current version of Mathematica and license.
Mathematica licensing on our own EECS license server will expire November 30, 2014. If you have been using an older version of Matlab with our license server, you can update your licensing configuration to point to the new campus license server. See the IRIS Mathematica FAQ Page for details.
cluster.eecs fileservice unresponsive
We are seeing a high load on cluster.eecs, resulting in NFS fileservice requests being delayed or failing. This affects all project shares hosted on cluster.eecs, and any services dependent on files there. Notably, this includes many research group websites.
Staff are investigating.

Updated Synopsys Licensing
The new licenses for Synopsys tools (such as Sentaurus WorkBench), effective September 25, 2014, are limited to working with new versions of the tools — generally those with a 2014 release date. You may need to update your PATH to include the newer versions.
The following package release versions are included in the current licensing. These are installed on Instructional systems, and most are available on the department’s /usr/eesww for machines that mount it.
For Synopsys licensing, please note that the license server has changed. See /usr/eesww/synopsys/README for details.
