Email and URL forwarding for closed accounts

January 24, 2014 by Lars Rohrbach

IRIS previously offered courtesy email forwarding and URL redirect service for
up to one year after the closure of an IRIS account. We are removing
the “one year” limitation now, so that you can expect forwarding to continue
into the forseeable future after your account is closed, unless you request
otherwise.

Many members of our community publish papers and collaborate with others, with
their @eecs.berkeley.edu or @cs.berkeley.edu email address
serving as their primary contact. This
step will ensure that working relationships can continue well after leaving
the Berkeley campus.

Please see our
FAQ for IRIS Account Closing
page for more information.

Third Unplanned Power Outage to 165 Cory

April 10, 2013 by Lars Rohrbach

Report from Scott McNally:

“Power was just lost again at 3:40pm Wednesday, 4/10/13. We will have to triage the number of machines we allow on in this room once we restore power. Then we still have a power shutdown on Friday to replace the faulty breaker.”

Mailed earlier today to the Cory Sysadmins maillist:

“Campus is planning a shutdown of Electrical Services to Computer Machine Room 165 and the East Side 1st floor of Cory Hall on Friday, 4/12/2013, between the hours of 9am-Noon to replace the faulty breaker. We are currently operating critical equipment only in room 165. In fact we insist no additional equipment be turned back on at this time until after the repairs on Friday can be made. If you are able to shut down equipment that may not be needed between now and Friday, we ask that you do so.”

OS X Mountain Lion Site License

March 5, 2013 by Lars Rohrbach

Now available to the EECS/IRIS community: OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)!

IRIS has purchased a pool of licenses for OS X Mountain Lion, to make it
easier and more cost-effective for those in the EECS/IRIS community to upgrade.
Licenses purchased in volume cost us $9.99 per seat, versus the retail price
of $19.99 per seat. At this time we are assuming the cost, and not charging
people for individual licenses.

If you are going to use the Installer on
multiple machines, please let us know how many, so we can better track our
license purchases. Similarly, if your Mac already came with Mountain Lion or
was eligible for a free upgrade (Summer 2012 or newer), then let us know — we
can loan the installer to you without needing to pay Apple for an extra license.

You may borrow Mountain Lion installation media at the Helpdesk
(395 Cory Hall) — we can loan you a DVD, or help transfer the installer via USB
to your laptop or USB key (8 Gb or larger). We cannot provide direct downloads
of the Mountain Lion installer at this time.

To check whether an older system is capable of running OS X Mountain Lion,
please consult Apple’s System
requirements for OS X Mountain Lion
.

Snow Leopard (10.6) and Lion (10.7) systems should apply standard Mac updates
before running the Mountain Lion installer. Earlier systems (e.g. Leopard, 10.5)
may find the following article useful:
How to install Mountain Lion over Leopard
