Enforcement actions for out-of-date Mac OS X
The campus ISP (Information Security and Policy) group
plans to begin enforcement actions for out-of-date Mac OS X operating
systems starting April 1, 2016.
While Apple does not officially acknowledge the end of support for Mac
OS X operating systems, it appears Apple is only supporting
Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan).
Versions of Mac OS X earler than Mac OS X 10.10 are considered
to be out-of-date and therefore not compliant with the software
updates standard of the campus “Minimum Security Standards for Networked
Devices” at
Starting on April 1, 2016, if the campus ISP group detects that your
device is running an out-of-date Mac OS X operating system, they
will issue a ticket and you will have five days to respond and either
fix the vulnerability or apply for an exception to the
campus “Minimum Security Standards for Networked Devices.”
In general, Mac OS X 10.9 software and applications are
compatible with Mac OS X 10.10 and Mac OS X 10.11.
Upgrading from Mac OS X 10.9 to Mac OS X 10.10 and Mac OS X 10.11
is free.

BWRC Wi-Fi Maintenance, 3/3/16 7AM
We will be performing Wi-Fi upgrades at BWRC on Thursday morning to address a critical security vulnerability and also to upgrade the access points. The wireless network will be unavailable during this time and should be fully operational by 8AM.
The new access points will support 802.11ac with 80MHz channels, and will also provide increased coverage and signal performance.
If you have any questions about either of these upgrades, please email networks@eecs.berkeley.edu.

login.eecs downtime Wednesday February 24, 2016 06:30-08:00am
login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU will be down for patching and needed reboot to activate changes delivered by some Oracle patches.
Though the scheduled downtime is 6:30am to 8am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

Project storage migration
As
previously announced, we are in process of migrating our central file storage
system to a new cluster of Network Appliance hardware.
Beginning February 15 (President’s Day), we will be migrating project and cluster
storage spaces to the new hardware. Initial synchronizations will be done over the
next two weeks, so that the final sync and cutover time will be reduced for the larger project spaces.
We are initially proposing the following schedule:
Time Project New mount
Feb 15 6:00-6:30pm /cproj/nlp proj40.eecs:/nlp
Feb 15 6:15-7:00pm /proj/ptolemy proj40.eecs:/ptolemy
Feb 15 6:45-7:30pm /proj/parlab proj40.eecs:/parlab
Feb 15 6:45-7:30pm /proj/radlab proj30.eecs:/proj30/radlab
Feb 15 7:15-8:00pm /proj/efros proj10.eecs:/efros
Feb 15 9:00pm-7:00am /cproj/(others) proj40.eecs:/cproj/(sharename)
Feb 16 8pm-7am /proj/[a-c]* proj10.eecs:/proj10/(sharename)
Feb 17 8pm-7am /proj/[d-q]* proj20.eecs:/proj20/(sharename)
Feb 18 8pm-7am /proj/[r-z]* proj30.eecs:/proj30/(sharename)
Feb 19 8pm-7am Followup/postponed and missed migrations
If migration of your project space needs to be postponed or scheduled for
a specific time, please
let us know at help@eecs. We know that downtime for
some project spaces needs to be minimized, and
we’ll do our best to coordinate another time with you.
As with the home directories, NFS exports will change. Automount maps will be updated at the designated migration start time. Re-mounts of project spaces will be necessary.
CIFS mounts should use the new node hostnames for best performance, with the
usual sharename, e.g. \\\\proj20.eecs\macsww
Changes to Unix SWW NFS exports
Unix SWW is moving to our new storage hardware. There are some changes
to the layout, reflecting the elimination of separately-shared subdirectories.
The new layout is available at:
https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/idsg/sww/announcement/SWW-layout
EESWW has also been migrated. See our Unix EESWW info.
Automount maps have already been updated. If you are using the automount maps
to mount SWW or EESWW, you won’t need to make any changes on your side, but you may need to
remount/reboot to begin using the revised location. Statically-configured mounts
of SWW or EESWW will need to be updated.
The old SWW locations will continue to work until at least March 15th 2016. At that
time the old exports will be terminated.
