Sutardja Dai Hall Network Disruption, 1/6/22

Sutardja Dai Hall networks experienced a number of interruptions and outages this morning between 6:44 and 11:21, as a result of electrical maintenance in the building which we were not informed of in advance.

We believe the network to be fully recovered at this time. Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any ongoing issues.

Mailing lists maintenance, Dec 22 6pm

The IRIS Mailing List Server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu will be undergoing routine maintenance tonight, Dec 22, beginning at 6pm. The server should be back no later than 6:30pm. The web interface will be unavailable during this time, and any mail sent to a list on lists.eecs.berkeley.edu will be held and distributed after the server is back up.

Dept NetApp Filer Maintenance, 3pm January 3, 2022

We will be performing an OS upgrade on our departmental NetApp filers (upgrading from OnTAP version 9.7 to 9.8), which will require a service outage from 3pm to 9pm on Monday, January 3, 2022. All NFS and CIFS access to the filer (home and project storage) will be down during that time. Services (e.g. webservice) that depend on this storage will also be down or unresponsive.

While we are scheduling a 6 hour maintenance window, we will attempt to minimize the service outage if possible.

When maintenance is completed, NFS clients should automatically resume normal operation. CIFS clients (such as Windows and MacOS) may need to remount filesystems, or simply be rebooted.

Cory Hall Network Maintenance, 12/27-29

During curtailment, on Mon-Wed December 27th-29th, we will be migrating the Cory Hall access switches from the old core switch to the building core router.

We expect wired networks will be interrupted for about a minute during the migration. Wireless networks may be interrupted for longer (possibly up to 15 minutes). This post will be updated as each stage is completed, or if any schedule changes become necessary.

Firewall Changes to Soda Hall 3rd and 4th Floor Networks, Mon. 12/20

At 6AM on Monday, December 20, we will be migrating these two Soda Hall networks to our new border firewall:

128.32.112.0/24 (Soda Hall 3rd floor: primarily rooms 330, 340, and many offices along the East wall)
128.32.132.0/24 (Soda Hall 4th floor: primarily RISE Lab)

There will be a brief interruption to these networks as they are migrated. After the migration, we encourage system administrators to test that traffic across the firewall is behaving as expected.

IT Support During Winter 2021 Energy Curtailment

Due to the Winter Holidays, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Thursday, December 23 to Friday, December 31, reopening on Monday, January 3, 2022. 

All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis.

The IRIS Helpdesk office will be closed Monday, December 22 through Friday, January 7, re-opening on January 10. If you need assistance between December 20-22 or January 3-7, please email help@eecs, and we may be able to schedule an appointment with you. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs during the campus closure period, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until January 3.

Requests for IRIS network support or new IRIS accounts that are received after 5pm December 21 may not be processed until January 3, 2022.

During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (for details, see the Instructional website). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until January 3.

Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:

December 2021 Windows Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, December 14th, 2021. PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, December 15th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, December 15th, depending on additional software updates.

Various Linux servers (login, dhcp, DNS, SMTP, NTP) downtime Tuesday November 30, 2021 06:30-07:45 am

Various Linux servers will be down for patching and needed reboots to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.

login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.

The departmental dhcp server is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.

cronus one of the departmental DNS and time servers is scheduled for downtime from 6:45am-7:00am.

rhea the other departmental DNS and time server is scheduled for downtime from 7:00am-7:15am.

The departmental authenticating outgoing SMTP server gateway.eecs is scheduled for downtime from 7:30am to 7:45am.

We expect actual downtimes to be less than scheduled.

Cory Hall Network Outage, 10/26/21

Update: The malfunctioning switch was repaired and service was restored as of 9:22 AM.
