Problems with IMAP login

March 26, 2009 by IRIS Staff

We are currently experiencing problems with the IMAP service which prevent successful login to imap.eecs.berkeley.edu to retrieve and read email.

Access via mail clients such as Thunderbird or mutt is affected – those trying to access mail this way will experience login failures despite using valid logins and passwords.

Access via the webmail client at https://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Mail is also affected. While login is successful, only the address book is available – no mail access is available.

Outgoing email via gateway.eecs.berkeley.edu is unaffected. Mail forwarding to other email services such as CalMail should still continue to work.

IRIS Staff are working to resolve this problem.

Sutardja Dai Hall is online!

March 23, 2009 by IRIS Staff

IRIS network engineers have been hard at work designing and deploying data networks throughout Sutardja Dai Hall, the new home of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Dado and Maria Banatao Institute@CITRIS Berkeley.

Now, as CITRIS staff begin moving in, Sutardja Dai Hall is officially online. The new network features Cisco Aironet 1250 wireless access points providing high-speed 802.11n wireless networking at 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz with data rates up to 300 Mbps per radio. Enterprise grade Extreme Networks BlackDiamond 8800 switches provide wired 1000Base-T gigabit Ethernet connectivity throughout the building.

Support for the new network is provided by IRIS, just like in Soda and Cory Halls, and access is available to anyone with an IRIS account.

Approved Switches List Updated

March 23, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Two new models of small network switches were added to the IRIS network Approved Switches list to offer gigabit Ethernet options for connecting multiple devices to a single network jack.

The helpdesk is now selling the Netgear GS105 Prosafe 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch for $45.

While local gigabit switches won’t increase your Internet connection speed on the 100BASE-TX networks in Soda or Cory Halls, they offer a future-proof solution. The new models are ideal for use on the new 1000BASE-T network in Sutardja Dai Hall.

Scheduled Downtime for 5th Floor Cory Switch

March 17, 2009 by IRIS Staff

One of the switches on the 5th floor of Cory will be down for about 10 minutes. This impacts the rooms in the DOP center mainly, and wireless in that area as well.

This was originally scheduled for Monday, the 16th, but has been rescheduled for Tuesday, the 17th.

Wireless Authentication Issue

March 9, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Some users have had some difficulties authenticating to some wireless WLANs. EECS-Secure in particular is an issue. EECS-Open may or may not be an issue. EECS and AirBears are not a problem at this time. We are currently investigating the RADIUS server as the root of the problem. Hopefully we will have more info tomorrow.

Home Directory Downtime

March 7, 2009 by IRIS Staff

home.eecs will go down briefly (a minute or two) twice on Saturday (03/07). The first downtime will be around noon, and the second will probably happen within the hour. This is to replace some failing hardware.

Clients that access home.eecs via Network File System (NFS) should not be affected by this scheduled maintenance. Clients that use Common Internet File System (CIFS), such as Windows and MacOS machines, may notice a disconnection (and should re-connect automatically).

No Network Access for Some Machines

February 27, 2009 by Lars Rohrbach

As a result of some work being completed on the DHCP server this morning, some properly-registered mobile devices were refused DHCP support, so they were not granted access to EECS networks. Staff are in process of fixing the problem.

AirBears usage is not affected.

Some email delayed

February 25, 2009 by Lars Rohrbach

There were some email delays on one of the inbound spam appliances. Staff were quickly made aware of the problem, and are working with the vendor to help prevent this from occurring in the future.

Service has been restored to normal.

Jabber Unavailable Outside EECS Networks

February 25, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Jabber chat service was unavailable to clients outside the EECS networks for about two hours this morning as traffic was being blocked by the EECS border firewall.

This was due to the IP for jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu changing earlier without the relevant firewall rules being updated in the firewall. My apologies for the oversight, the firewall has since been updated and outside connections are working again.
