Some users have had some difficulties authenticating to some wireless WLANs. EECS-Secure in particular is an issue. EECS-Open may or may not be an issue. EECS and AirBears are not a problem at this time. We are currently investigating the RADIUS server as the root of the problem. Hopefully we will have more info tomorrow.

Home Directory Downtime
Clients that access home.eecs via Network File System (NFS) should not be affected by this scheduled maintenance. Clients that use Common Internet File System (CIFS), such as Windows and MacOS machines, may notice a disconnection (and should re-connect automatically).

No Network Access for Some Machines
As a result of some work being completed on the DHCP server this morning, some properly-registered mobile devices were refused DHCP support, so they were not granted access to EECS networks. Staff are in process of fixing the problem.
AirBears usage is not affected.

Jabber Unavailable Outside EECS Networks
This was due to the IP for jabber.eecs.berkeley.edu changing earlier without the relevant firewall rules being updated in the firewall. My apologies for the oversight, the firewall has since been updated and outside connections are working again.

Brief Downtime for Multiple IRIS Services
The EECS Department website, FTP server, Windows Terminal Server (winterm), the IRIS website, Jabber, and Sympa (mailing list) services will all experience brief periods of unavailability beginning at 7:00am on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, possibly lasting until 8:00am.
The servers hosting these services will be changing IP addresses during this time as their current subnet (128.32.139.0/24) is being repurposed. DNS will be updated at 7:00am as well, so you shouldn’t need to make any changes to client applications unless you’ve been accessing any of these services directly by their IP rather than by their DNS name.

IRIS wireless networks problem at BWRC
A script utilized to update dhcp support at BWRC for the EECS, EECS-Open and EECS-Secure networks contained a logic error which resulted in an attempted restart of the dhcpd daemon when the dhcpd configuration files contained an error. Both the configuration file and the script were corrected and the dhcp daemon was started to resume service.
AirBears support at BWRC was not affected by this outage.
IRIS wireless support in other buildings was not affected.
This incident was not related to some devices on the BWRC restricted network (128.32.63.0/26) having incorrect netmasks.

Announcing New EECSbackup for Windows, MacOSX
IRIS would like to encourage the EECS community to keep appropriate backups of important data. To that end, IRIS is making EECSbackup scripts available to Windows and MacOS users. We continue to recommend that important files be kept in your EECS home directory, where snapshots and backups are routine, to safeguard against laptop or desktop hardware failure; these backup scripts can help you simplify the copying of your important local data from your laptop or desktop to your EECS home directory.
EECSbackup scripts are currently being provided as a “public beta” release; feedback to help@eecs is welcome.
Please see the EECSbackup FAQ page for more information.
