EECS/AirBears Wireless Network outage 9:00PM on May 6

May 6, 2010 by Janet Shu

We would like to upgrade to the latest release of HMOL, 3.4r3 for some APs at Euclid Brewed Awakening coffee shop area. The latest HMOL release has many new and exciting features, including IPSec VPN access, Performance Sentinel, and improved client statistics. This upgrade should take less than half a hour.

Spam Email Modification

May 3, 2010 by Carlos Caceres

In response to a few users missing some important emails that were
flagged as Spam, IDSG has been requested to modify the way we are
tagging Spam. We will be raising the TAG_LEVEL threshold on our Spam
appliances. This change will be made Wed 5/5/10. Users may see some
increased Spam as a result. However, we are expecting fewer legitimate
emails will now be flagged as Spam. Here is a link showing how to manage
filters and enable white/black-lists to help mitigate any possible
increase in Spam:

6th floor Soda switch replacment

April 29, 2010 by IRIS Staff

Due to a power supply failure, I will be replacing one of the stacked switches which serves the 6th Floor of Soda Hall. The switch is currently operating only on an external redundant power supply.

The outage will definitely affect half of the connections on the 6th floor for about 20 minutes; if a full stack reboot is required (likely) the rest of the 6th floor connections, including wireless, will be briefly disrupted.

Dept Website, Mailing Lists, ACG Applications down 4/1, 9pm

April 1, 2010 by Rob McNicholas

The department webserver (www.eecs/www.cs), mailing list server (lists.eecs), Jabber server (jabber.eecs) and ACG’s application server (buffy.eecs) will be down for maintenance 9pm-midnight on Thursday, April 1.

These services all run on a virtualized cluster. The cluster storage will be undergoing maintenance that requires all systems to be shut down. We expect the total downtime to be less than 2 hours, but are scheduling 3 in case of unexpected problems.

This is a reschedule of the maintenance of March 12th which was not successfully completed. I have installed some additional patches on the system which should avoid the problem which occurred on 3/12.

If successful, this will be the last time we ever have to do this very intrusive maintenance. Additionally, this will allow us to retire some buggy software on our SAN which has been the cause of previous department-wide storage outages.

This outage will affect various servers in Cory Hall, including the EECS Exchange servers FONTUS and OWA; some Instructional servers (see http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/notices.html#spring-break); and license service for Cadence and Synopsys licenses.

All Cory Hall networking will be down during the power outage.

Exchange service should be restored by late Monday evening, after power is restored. All remaining services should be back online by midday Tuesday.
