Resolved Incidents

March IRIS Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024. Various IRIS Windows and Linux servers will be patched and rebooted Tuesday or Wednesday.

PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, March 13th, at 3:00am. WINTERM may be unavailable until 10:00am Wednesday, depending on additional software updates.

Linux servers lists.eecs, iris2.eecs (for access to the network and roster databases), and login.eecs will be patched and rebooted Tuesday night. DNS servers cronus and rhea may also be briefly unavailable while rebooting at approximately 8:00pm Tuesday.

On Wednesday, March 13th, the departmental DHCP server is scheduled for downtime from 10pm to 10:30pm (actual downtime is expected to be shorter than scheduled).

EECS Websites issue Feb 22 5:27-5:41pm

Due to a configuration error, many IRIS-hosted websites such as people.eecs.berkeley.edu, www2.eecs, iris2.eecs, and other, were unavailable beginning at around 5:27pm earlier today. The problem was resolved around 5:41pm. We apologize for the inconvenience.

File Server Maintenance (3 of 3), Tues. 2/13 12PM

Tuesday, February 13th, between 12:00 and 1:30 PM, we will be performing network maintenance on one of the NetApp file servers which provides home and project file storage.

We expect no noticeable impact from this work, but there is the possibility for some increased latency and/or packet loss to the file servers. We will be monitoring for any performance issues and will be prepared to roll back the changes if necessary.

Update 13:07: This work has been completed without any noticeable interruptions. Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any file service related issues.

Unexpected Power Outage at Campus Datacenter

A test of temporary generator power at the campus Data Center didn’t go well, and the Data Center was shut down at about 11am this morning. This affects a number of IRIS services, such as lists.eecs (mailing lists) and IRIS apps (account and system registration requests), and is also having an impact on wifi authentication.

File Server Maintenance (2 of 3), Thurs. 2/8 1PM

Today, February 8th, between 1 and 3 PM, we will be performing network maintenance on one of the NetApp file servers which provides home and project file storage.

We expect no noticeable impact from this work, but there is the possibility for some increased latency and/or packet loss to the file servers. We will be monitoring for any performance issues and will be prepared to roll back the changes if necessary.

Update: This work was completed without any interruption to file shares. Please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any issues.

Sutardja Dai Network Interruptions, Wed. 1/10

From 6AM to 10AM on Wednesday, January 10th, facilities will be performing electrical work in Sutardja Dai Hall which will affect power to our network equipment.

We expect that as a result, there will be two 5-10 minute network outages throughout SDH, one each at the beginning and end of the electrical work.

During these two periods, please expect all wired and wireless networks to be unavailable while our equipment reboots. We expect full network service to resume after each of these periods, however if we experience an unexpected prolonged outage we will update this post with more information.

Update 1/10 12:30PM: All SDH networks are online and stable after a couple brief interruptions earlier this morning. Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you continue to experience any network-related issues.

Mailing List maintenance, Wed 6-6:30pm

The Department’s mailing list server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu will be offline for maintenance beginning at 6pm on Wednesday, January 3 2024. The server should be back up no later than 6:30pm. During this time the web interface will not be accessible, and mail to mailing lists will be delayed. This maintenance is to prepare for the January 4th power outage.
