EECS Website, Mailing Lists and IM services down since 10:30PM

December 21, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Starting around 10:30PM tonight, the EECS website, Mailing List and IM services (aka www.eecs, lists.eecs and Jabber) went down due to a problem with EECS Storage.

While EECS Storage is back up and most affected services — including access to home directories, project storage, Software Warehouse, and IMAP — recovered, Maillists and IM stayed down due to a backend database server that had not yet recovered from the storage outage. The Xen cluster that provides these services lost all contact with the SAN and and to be restarted.

Staff are working now to bring these remaining services back up.

In the meanwhile, if you are still having problems accessing your home directory, project storage, Software Warehouse, or IMAP, please contact the EECS Helpdesk.

winsww and macsww data moved

December 17, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Due to end-of-life issues the hardware that was winsww.eecs and macserver.eecs has been retired.

All data was moved to project.eecs shares.

`\\\\winsww\sww`, `\\\\macsww\macsww` and `\\\\macserver\macsww` still work but now point to project.eecs

This work was completed now as the volume of use is very low.

Network Edge Refresh

December 15, 2009 by IRIS Staff

IRIS is upgrading all edge network switches in Cory, Soda, & BWRC. The new switches will provide gigabit Ethernet to all wired network connections.

During the upgrade, most devices will experience only one or two brief disruptions of a few seconds each as cables are moved during the scheduled maintenance window.

There is a possibility that physical constraints will force extended downtime in some areas; we will contact sysadmins of registered systems in advance.

The upgrade will take many weeks and this schedule will evolve and change. Please revisit this announcement to find the current schedule.

Mathematica has expired, temporarily

December 1, 2009 by IRIS Staff

The EECS Mathematica license expired as of yesterday. Despite repeated efforts to have the license extended with UCB Technology Acquisition & Sales, we have been so far unsuccessful. We expect resolution very soon. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Widespread service disruption due to UPS failure

November 21, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Last evening about 21:26 there was a power failure in the main EECS server room in Soda Hall. The UPS held up some systems until about 22:00 at which time staff shut the room down completely. Many EECS services were disrupted as a result. The problem was found to be in the UPS which fried the high voltage output terminal block. The terminal block was bypassed and the UPS has been removed from service until further notice. Most EECS computing services have been restored as of 03:15 this morning with the exception of the IRIS web server, which was restored around 10:15am Sunday.

Thanks to the staff who came in early Sunday morning to deal with this issue.

Router changes

November 20, 2009 by IRIS Staff

I will be disabling several 1Gbit Ethernet links between EECS and campus and Millennium and campus at 0830 on Friday. The traffic was previously migrated to 10Gbit links.

This is stage 2 of the EECS border upgrade project.

During the same maintenance window, I will be installing new line cards into the Soda Hall core router.

This is in preparation for upgrading the edge switches in Soda Hall.

No disruption is expected from either change.

(This work was completed without incident.)
