Widespread service disruption due to UPS failure

November 21, 2009 by IRIS Staff

Last evening about 21:26 there was a power failure in the main EECS server room in Soda Hall. The UPS held up some systems until about 22:00 at which time staff shut the room down completely. Many EECS services were disrupted as a result. The problem was found to be in the UPS which fried the high voltage output terminal block. The terminal block was bypassed and the UPS has been removed from service until further notice. Most EECS computing services have been restored as of 03:15 this morning with the exception of the IRIS web server, which was restored around 10:15am Sunday.

Thanks to the staff who came in early Sunday morning to deal with this issue.

Mailing List Messages Delayed

November 4, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The Department’s mailing list server, lists.eecs.berkeley.edu, ran out of memory last night around 12:45am. The service was restarted at 8:45am, and all delayed email has now been delivered.

More memory has recently been purchased and installed. The server will be reconfigured later this week to use the new memory. We hope this will resolve this problem.

Mailing List Web Interface down

September 21, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The web interface to the Department’s mailing list server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu is unavailable. There is a problem authenticating against our LDAP servers over SSL. This problem is currently being investigated, and we hope to have the web server available soon.

Mail delivery to lists hosted on lists.eecs is not affected. No mail has been delayed or lost.

If you need assistance managing your list during this outage, please send your requests to help@eecs and staff will make them for you.

Major Upgrades on June 6, 2009

June 6, 2009 by IRIS Staff

On Saturday, June 6th, we will be doing major upgrades to some of our
backend systems. This work will start at 10 am. We expect that some of
services will start coming back up in about 3 hours, but due to the
complexity and extensiveness of the upgrades, the downtime may extend well
beyond the 3 hour mark. These upgrades are imperative for the continuing
reliability of the infrastructure services. We apologize for the
inconvenience.

The following services will be affected:

* Home directories
* Project space
* UNIX SWW
* Departmental/IDSG web servers
* IMAP (due to the additional work, IMAP will be down for an additional 2 hours)
* argus/login (UNIX login servers)
* Department websites www.eecs / www.cs and all hosted project sites
* Department mailing lists hosted on lists.eecs
* buffy and all ACG applications
* wikis hosted on wiki.eecs
* Department’s jabber server, jabber.eecs

Department website, mailing lists, jabber offline

May 21, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The department’s web server (www.eecs & www.cs), mailing list server (lists.eecs), and jabber server (jabber.eecs) all run on a Xen virtual cluster. After last night’s network failure was resolved around 2:30am, the Xen cluster failed to recover gracefully. These services had to be manually restarted this morning. Web and mailing list services were restored around 9:20am, and jabber was restored around 9:45am.

Staff are investigating why this occurred and how to prevent it from happening again.

Brief Downtime for Multiple IRIS Services

February 25, 2009 by IRIS Staff

The EECS Department website, FTP server, Windows Terminal Server (winterm), the IRIS website, Jabber, and Sympa (mailing list) services will all experience brief periods of unavailability beginning at 7:00am on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, possibly lasting until 8:00am.

The servers hosting these services will be changing IP addresses during this time as their current subnet (128.32.139.0/24) is being repurposed. DNS will be updated at 7:00am as well, so you shouldn’t need to make any changes to client applications unless you’ve been accessing any of these services directly by their IP rather than by their DNS name.

Mailing List maintenance, Friday, Jan 23, 6pm

January 23, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The Department’s mailing list server, lists.eecs.berkeley.edu, will be shutdown, upgraded and restarted starting at 6pm tonight. Mail sent to department mailing lists will be delayed during the outage, which is not expected to last longer than 15 minutes. The lists.eecs web interface will also be unavailable during this time.

A minor upgrade to the mailing list software was recently released which fixes a bug that was introduced in the previous version. Some of our mailing lists were affected by this bug, so we are upgrading with short notice.

The upgrade has been applied to a test server with no issues, and we expect the total downtime to be less than 5 minutes.

[Actual downtime was 7:17pm – 7:18pm.]

Mailing Lists Maintenance, Sunday, Jan 4th, 10pm

January 4, 2009 by Rob McNicholas

The Department’s mailing list server, lists.eecs.berkeley.edu, will be offline beginning at 10pm for maintenance. The mailing list software will be upgraded to Sympa 5.4.4. This is a minor upgrade which consists of numerous bug fixes.

Service should resume no later than 11pm, probably much sooner.

During the outage, any mail sent to a department mailing list will be held for delivery. All mail will be delivered when the maintenance is completed.
