Delay for mailing lists on lists.eecs

September 20, 2011 by Lars Rohrbach

Delivery of some email to mailing lists hosted on lists.eecs was delayed, apparently due to issues of communication with our LDAP server. LDAP service was restarted, and mail delivery has resumed normal operation.

Mailing List Messages Delayed, Sep 2

September 2, 2011 by Rob McNicholas

Beginning around midnight on September 2, our MySQL database server began refusing connections from lists.eecs.berkeley.edu. Since all subscription information is kept in the database, no mailing list messages could be delivered during that time. The database server was reset around 9:30am and all queued departmental email has been delivered at this time (10am). No email should have been lost.

Initial investigation points to the database server intentionally blocking connections due to too many simultaneous requests from lists.eecs. This investigation will continue and the database server will be tuned as needed to prevent a recurrence of this problem.

EECS Listserver and Jabber/IM down due to storage problem

July 10, 2011 by IRIS Staff

Starting sometime before 9PM, the root filesystem on rockyroad, the server that hosts both the EECS IM (Jabber) and the EECS Lists (Sympa) services, went into read-only mode, taking both services offline.

Staff are investigating the cause of this.

UPS Installation/Various System Outages

March 21, 2011 by IRIS Staff

Delivery is expected Monday for our new UPS which will be installed in the 290 Soda Hall server room. Some services will be down for short periods on Tuesday while they are moved off of room power and onto temporary power. Later in the week, there will be a second outage while those machines are moved onto the new UPS. Additionally, there may be a longer outage of our storage systems while some upgrades are done.

While I realize that this post is somewhat vague, a lot depends on exactly when the UPS is delivered and how long it takes to install it. I will be posting more refined notes to narrow down the scope of what services will be out (and when) as time goes on.

While we realize that there may be some inconveniences for some, please bear with us as we strive update our services and minimize outages for the future

EECS Listserver and Jabber/IM down due to database problems

March 12, 2011 by IRIS Staff

Starting last night around 10:50PM, the [EECS mailing list service]( https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/15-faq/mailinglists/) and the [EECS IM service (Jabber/XMPP)](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/15-faq/35-unsupported/04-jabber.html) went offline due to problems communicating with a backend database server.

Staff are looking into the problem. Please note, as [help@eecs](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/help/) is a mailing list on the EECS listserver, staff may not be get problem reports sent there until after this problem is resolved. Please check here for updates until these services are back up.

Brief outage to most IRIS services

March 3, 2011 by Rob McNicholas

The IRIS Storage Area Network seems to have gone offline around 8:20am, and was restored around 8:45am. This impacted almost all IRIS services.

More details will be posted as they become available.

Problems with various EECS services due to electrical work

February 24, 2011 by IRIS Staff

Due to work related to the installation of a new UPS, damage occurred to cabling used by the EECS Storage systems, causing unplanned downtime for a variety of EECS services, including:

* EECS Home Directories and Project space (should be back up)
* Unix Login Server – login.eecs (rebooted)
* DHCP (back up)
* Departmental Webserver (rebooting)
* Matlab licensing (still down)
* EECS IM/Jabber (still down)
* EECS Mailing lists – lists.eecs (still down)

Staff are working to bring these services and others back up now.

Mailing List Server Delays

January 14, 2011 by Rob McNicholas

The Department’s mailing list server, lists.eecs, was not delivering mail starting around 11am until 2:15pm.

Due to issues with the department’s LDAP directory, lists.eecs stopped processing messages around 10:57am. Once the ldap server was restarted, lists.eecs was restarted around 2:28pm.

By around 3pm, all queued messages seem to have been delivered.

Backup plans are being put in place to manually recover from future LDAP outages.

Brief outages to a number of services, *rescheduled* Dec 20, 5-7pm

December 20, 2010 by Rob McNicholas

A number of Department services will experience brief outages between 5pm and 7pm on Thursday, Dec 16th for SSL Certificate renewal. These services are:

* www.eecs / www.cs and other IRIS-hosted websites
* lists.eecs mailing list web interface
* jabber.eecs IM server
* iris.eecs IRIS website
* wiki.eecs IRIS Wiki hosting

No service should be down for more than 10 minutes.

[SSL Certificates](https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/SSL_certificate) are needed to secure connections to the servers. They typically expire every 1, 2, or 3 years. We are installing 3-year certificates at this time.

Advanced users may want to know that we are switching to a new Certificate Authority at this time. Please see [the Nov 4th IRIS News article](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/news/4591-new-ssl-certificate-service) for information on this new CA.

Dept Website, Mailing Lists, ACG Applications down 4/1, 9pm

April 1, 2010 by Rob McNicholas

The department webserver (www.eecs/www.cs), mailing list server (lists.eecs), Jabber server (jabber.eecs) and ACG’s application server (buffy.eecs) will be down for maintenance 9pm-midnight on Thursday, April 1.

These services all run on a virtualized cluster. The cluster storage will be undergoing maintenance that requires all systems to be shut down. We expect the total downtime to be less than 2 hours, but are scheduling 3 in case of unexpected problems.

This is a reschedule of the maintenance of March 12th which was not successfully completed. I have installed some additional patches on the system which should avoid the problem which occurred on 3/12.

If successful, this will be the last time we ever have to do this very intrusive maintenance. Additionally, this will allow us to retire some buggy software on our SAN which has been the cause of previous department-wide storage outages.
