LDAP server upgrade

July 11, 2013 by Rob McNicholas

[IRIS](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu) is embarking on a project to upgrade the department’s LDAP infrastructure (ldap.eecs and ldap.cs) before the summer is over. The current server software is a proprietary product that is at the end of its lifetime. We are migrating to an open-source product that is in wide use, [OpenLDAP](http://www.openldap.org/).

Our goal is for this transition to be largely transparent. Basic functionality such as mail client address book look-ups and anonymous binds will be thoroughly tested, and our goal is that most people won’t notice when we make the switch.

However, if you are an application developer or system administrator that accesses our directory programmatically, we would like to invite you to participate in our testing phase to ensure your applications or scripts will still work with the new server.

If you would like to participate in this testing, or just monitor the progress of the project, please subscribe to the mailing list ldap-migration@lists.eecs.berkeley.edu by [sending an email to sympa@lists.eecs.berkeley.edu with the body “subscribe ldap-migration”](mailto:sympa@lists.eecs.berkeley.edu?body=subscribe%20ldap-migration).

All further discussion of this project will take place on that mailing list. A detailed and technical project plan will be posted there early next week.

Please send any questions to the IRIS helpdesk at help@eecs.berkeley.edu

Thanks,

-Rob

Upcoming Wifi Improvements

June 27, 2013 by IRIS Staff

Dear EECS Community,

Over the past few months IDSG has invested significant amounts of time reviewing and analyzing the feedback provided to us, via multiple channels, by the EECS community. Among these channels were the IRIS survey, network trouble tickets and help desk reports. The most commonly received piece of feedback regarded the general lack of reliability and performance in the wireless services currently offered by the college.

After carefully inspecting the situation and attempting to determine the root cause of this issue it has been found that the single most significant contributor to this problem is the proliferation of rogue wireless devices. These devices not only decrease the reliability of the EECS network as a whole, but also exacerbate a number of smaller issues inherent to the very nature of wireless communications.

In order to adequately confront this threat and provide our community with the expected level of wireless service, we will begin active mitigation of unapproved wireless devices found to be broadcasting in [IRIS airspace](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/15-faq/21-network/20-wireless.html#coverage) beginning on Thursday, June 27th. These actions will only apply to devices that provide wireless service such as access points and wireless routers. All other devices (including phones, tablets, and PDAs) will be entirely unaffected by this change. This action will be performed automatically and without prejudice as per our wireless vendor’s best practices.

As always we are open to feedback from the community and welcome the reporting of any and all issues at help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Thank you,
IDSG Networking Team

ATT Cellular Coverage Improvement

June 21, 2013 by Eric Fraser

A new ATT cell has been added to the top of Etcheverry Hall. You should see a dramatic improvement of signal strength throughout the Northwest corner of campus. It is still being tuned so there could be brief outages in the next few weeks.

EECS Switching Upgrade

June 21, 2013 by Derek Calderon

EECS Community,

In preparation for the upcoming opening of Calvin Hall, IDSG will be making a number of small modifications to the switching core of the EECS network tomorrow, Friday the 21st, between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. These changes are not expected to have any user facing impacts but changes of this nature always carry with them an inherent risk.

As always please report any issues you experience to help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Thank you,

IDSG Networking Team

EECS bMail Training

June 18, 2013 by IRIS Staff

Training and Q&A in the bMail user interface, will be held from 1:30 to 3:00pm in 306 Soda, the HP Auditorium, on Aug 14th, 2013

The first 30-45 minutes of the session will be focused on an overview of bMail and connecting to Thunderbird. Then in the Q&A portion we will clarify any questions you have and listen to your concerns.

For you to have the smoothest migration experience possible we recommend attending one of these sessions.

Further training and videos are also available on the bConnected web site: http://bconnected.berkeley.edu

See https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/bmail for more useful links
