login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU will be down for patching and needed reboot to activate changes delivered by some Oracle patches.

Though the scheduled downtime is 6:30am to 8am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

Network Maintenance for Cory 3rd floor

The switch on the 3rd floor of Cory will be rebooted around 8:00AM on April 27. You may experience some intermittent network issues during the scheduled time from 8:00-10:00AM.

Mailing list mail delayed over the weekend

The department’s mailing list server ran out of disk space late Friday, April 26, around 4:30pm. A single very large message to one list caused what should have been a temporary issue. I removed some unnecessary files on Friday and thought that everything was working normally, but this morning noticed messages were not being distributed.

The server was restarted and has since caught up with all outstanding messages. Because of this you may notice messages sent over the last 3 days just showing up in your mailbox today, but no mail has been lost.

An investigation is underway as to why our old monitoring software did not alert us to this problem sooner. A new monitoring solution is being deployed in IRIS and this server will be moved to this new monitoring solution as soon as possible.

Partial loss Wireless Network on 4th floor of Soda hall

Part of wireless network on the 4th floor of Soda hall was down from 10:42am to 10:53am because that UPS failed during the power UPS testing from the electrician. Those APs are back on around 10:53am. Sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause. If you still experience any wireless issue in that area, please report to help@eecs

Retiring web redirects on www.eecs.berkeley.edu

IRIS offers a redirect service for our account holders to forward their http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~username (and www.cs.berkeley.edu) web page to another location. This is typically used when an account is closed.

We promise this forwarding for one year after an account is closed, but have never done a bulk cleanup, and the list has grown quite large. As a first step to cleaning these up, we are now checking the destination URLs to make sure they are still valid. On 9am on April 30, 2013, the attached list of URLs will be removed from the server configuration.

If you have an update for any of these redirects, please contact the IRIS helpdesk.

[Note: In the attached list, the URL we are redirecting is on the left side, the destination is on the right, and the HTTP response code is listed, or -1 if the remote host cannot be found or does not answer.]

Partial loss of network on 3rd floor of Cory hall connected to AC failure

Third Unplanned Power Outage to 165 Cory

Report from Scott McNally:

“Power was just lost again at 3:40pm Wednesday, 4/10/13. We will have to triage the number of machines we allow on in this room once we restore power. Then we still have a power shutdown on Friday to replace the faulty breaker.”

Mailed earlier today to the Cory Sysadmins maillist:

“Campus is planning a shutdown of Electrical Services to Computer Machine Room 165 and the East Side 1st floor of Cory Hall on Friday, 4/12/2013, between the hours of 9am-Noon to replace the faulty breaker. We are currently operating critical equipment only in room 165. In fact we insist no additional equipment be turned back on at this time until after the repairs on Friday can be made. If you are able to shut down equipment that may not be needed between now and Friday, we ask that you do so.”

Web and mailing list server patching, Apr 10 at 7am

The department’s web server (www.eecs, www.cs), mailing list server (lists.eecs), wiki server (wiki.eecs), application server (apps.eecs) and jabber server (jabber.eecs) will be restarted Wednesday, April 10 at 7am.

On Tuesday evening these servers will have operating system patches installed which require a restart. They will be restarted automatically at 7am Wednesday morning and should be back in service by 7:15am.

These servers will now be patched (and rebooted if necessary) on the morning following first Tuesday of each month, the same schedule as our Windows servers.

Second Power Outage to Cory Machine Room

Power to the 165 Cory Hall machine room appears to have failed again (see previous outage notice at https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/news/8913-power-outage-affecting-cory-machine ). This affects a variety of user-facing services, Instructional and research machines.

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013.

PRINT, WDS and WINTERM will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, April 10th, 2013, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM will be unavailable till 10:00am April 10th, 2013.
