end of life for Microsoft Windows XP

June 7, 2013 by Mark Kraitchman

Support ends for Microsoft Windows XP April 8, 2014 –

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/endofsupport.aspx

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/products/lifecycle

By default after April 8, 2014, devices running
Microsoft Windows XP should not be connected to the campus networks.

Running a device with an operating system past its end of life
is not compliant with the “software patch updates” standard of
the MSSND (Minimum Security Standards for Networked
Devices) at

http://security.berkeley.edu/MinStds

Please plan to upgrade or replace all devices running
Microsoft Windows XP before April 8, 2014.

Questions about this may be directed to the
IRIS help desk (help@eecs, 395 Cory 9:30am-5pm,
642-7777). For advanced help, please consider hiring CUSG.

Network cable switchover and disk upgrades for IRIS file servers on June 4th at 3pm

June 4, 2013 by IRIS Staff

On 3:00pm, Tuesday, June 4th, 2013, the network cables for cluster.eecs and inst-fs.eecs will be replaced in an effort to create more easily managed infrastructure. In addition, disk upgrades will take place on all department filers to increase available space. Minimal interruption of service is anticipated. NFS and CIFS mounts should reconnect automatically, although some windows mounts may need to be re-mounted. Maintenance may extend as long as 5pm, though system interruption should be a very short part of this window.

Filers change to support Windows 8

May 30, 2013 by IRIS Staff

In order to move towards greater support for Windows 8 in the department, SMB2 signing has been enabled on the filers. No adverse impact should be experienced, but please contact the helpdesk if your Windows mounts or CIFS shares start to act strangely.

LDAP & Jabber outage this morning, May 15, 2013

May 15, 2013 by Rob McNicholas

The department’s primary LDAP server ldap.eecs stopped responding early this morning around 12:30am. This affected a few other services which rely on ldap.eecs; we had reports of problems accessing Repo, and jabber.eecs stopped accepting connections at some point.

ldap.eecs was restarted at 7:00am and this would have restored most affected services. However, the jabber server seemed to be hung and had to be restarted; this was not noticed until around 10:30am.

Our ldap servers are aging and there is a current project underway to upgrade them to more modern hardware and software. An announcement about the scope of this project will be made in the coming weeks.

We are also planning to implement better monitoring of our jabber server so that future outages will be detected much more quickly.

May 3, 2013 directory server malfunctioning

May 3, 2013 by Mark Kraitchman

LDAP directory service from ldap.CS.Berkeley.EDU was malfunctioning from about Friday May 3, 2013 01:56 to about 06:57.

It appears authenticated outgoing smtp service on gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU also malfunctioned during that time frame when gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU failed to use ldap.EECS.Berkeley.EDU for LDAP directory service instead of ldap.CS.Berkeley.EDU
