EECS Network Maintenance on Aug 19

One of uplink 10G connection ports to the campus router was malfunctioning and had been move to the temp port. We have received the replacement module from our vendor for the malfunctioning port in the edge router. Installing the new module will not expect a complete outage, this task should be done less than 5 mins.

EECS Network Maintenance on Aug 19

We are continuing to do switch maintenance. The EECS switches(in 7A, 6A, 5A) are located at 7th, 6th, 5th floor of Soda will experience brief outages on Friday, Aug 19, 2011 beginning at 6:00a.m. due to network maintenance.

The wired network will be offline and users will experience a brief (couple minutes) outage while the switches are rebooted to apply new firmware. Since wireless networking devices are also fed by that device, wireless network will experience a brief outage as well.

EECS Network Maintenance on Aug 18

We are continuing to do switch maintenance. The EECS router(soda8810) will experience brief outages on Thursday, Aug 18, 2011 beginning at 6:00a.m. due to network maintenance.

The wired network will be offline and users will experience a brief (couple minutes) outage while the switch is rebooted to apply new firmware. Since wireless networking devices are also fed by that device, wireless network will experience a brief outage as well.

LDAP Outage

“There was a short LDAP outage between 2:50pm and 3:00pm today, that has been resolved. Impacted areas included IRIS web forms. If there are further problems with the server, please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu so we can investigate further. ”

IRIS to begin allowing longer usernames

Historically, usernames in EECS / IRIS have been limited to 8 characters in length, to maintain compatibility with legacy Unix systems. Most modern operating systems can now handle longer usernames, and so to better align our services with CalNet and other campus systems, we will begin allowing usernames of up to 20 characters in length. We will be enforcing [the same requirements as CalNet](https://wikihub.berkeley.edu/display/calnet/CalNet+ID+Requirements).

IRIS staff have been testing our services with long usernames to ensure compatibility. As expected, some Unix-based system do still have some issues, and we will be providing documentation on the problems we find for our supported operating system (Mac OS X, Redhat/CentOS Linux, and
Solaris). This article will be updated later with links to that
documentation.

At this time we would like to invite system administrators, programmers, database administrators or others who have systems that utilize IRIS usernames to begin testing their systems. If you would like us to create a test username for you, please contact help@eecs and describe your requirements.

This change will only apply to new accounts created after October 1, 2011 We will not be allowing current account holders to change their username.

EECS Network Maintenance on Aug 12

August 2011 Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, August 9th, 2011.

PRINT, WDS and WINTERM will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, August 10th, at 3:00 am.

EECS Network Maintenance

We have received the replacement part from our vendor for the malfunctioning module in the edge router. Installing the new part will result in reduction of bandwidth for a few minutes, but we do not expect a complete outage.

CalMail maintenance tonight, Aug 5

CalMail system maintenance will be done tonight from 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.. Expect intermittent outages between 5-10 minutes in length.
