Access Switch Upgrades, Sat-Sun 8/20-21

At the suggestion of our vendor, we will be upgrading various access switches to the latest supported software version. This will affect wired and wireless clients in Soda, Cory, and Sutardja Dai Halls, and wireless users in Blum Hall.

The first set of these upgrades will take place Saturday night at 10PM and will occur in waves. We are upgrading sixteen switches in four waves and expect to be done by 11:30.

The second will take place on Sunday night at 10PM, will affect a smaller group of switches, and should be done by 10:30.

Brief network interruptions (on the order of five minutes) are expected for users in these locations while switches reboot. Most locations will experience a single interruption, but some will require two. Where possible, we will stagger reboots in an attempt to maintain Wi-Fi coverage.

August 2016 Windows Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, August 9th, 2016.

PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, August 10th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, August 10th, depending on additional software updates.

dhcp server downtime Tuesday August 9, 2016 07:00-07:30am

The departmental dhcp server will be down for a needed reboot to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.

Though the scheduled downtime is 7:00am to 7:30am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

Border Firewall Upgrade, Sat. 7/30 3-5 PM

We will be performing a software upgrade of our border firewalls at 3PM on this Saturday, July 30th. The maintenance window is scheduled for 3-5 PM, but we expect it will take less time. This is a direly needed upgrade, as the code in production is nearing its tenth birthday.

Per the vendor, no service interruptions are expected, but short outages of our Internet connection are possible. All traffic internal to the EECS network will be unaffected. The Millennium research network resides outside of the firewall, which means that traffic between Millennium and the Internet will not be affected, but traffic between Millennium and the EECS network may be.

We understand this time may be inconvenient for some members of the community, but it was chosen due to staff and project management constraints. If you have a critical issue with this timing, please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu and we can attempt to accommodate you.

This maintenance window is for the first of two needed firewall upgrades. If the first goes well and we are confident in the system’s stability, we will perform both upgrades on Saturday afternoon. If we are unable to do so, there will be a second upgrade window occurring in early August.

Cory Third Floor Switch Upgrade, 7/30/16

As a followup from this morning’s outage, we will be upgrading the firmware on one of the Cory Hall third floor access switches on Saturday at 2PM. There will be a brief wired network outage for approximately half of the floor while the switch reboots. Wireless will be unaffected.

July 2016 – spam sent out via gateway.eecs

A compromised IRIS account was used to send out spam July 29th through July 31, 2016 via gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU

gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU was added to at least two different spam blacklists while it was spewing out spam. gateway has been delists\ed and the owner of the compromised IRIS account was contacted.

Partial Wired Network Outage, Cory 3rd Floor

There is currently a partial wired network outage on the third floor of Cory Hall due to a possible hardware failure. Approximately half of the wired ports are offline. Wireless networks are unaffected.

We are working to have service restored as soon as possible. An update will be posted when service is restored or at 10AM, whichever comes sooner.

Launch of the new EECS Website

The new EECS website was launched today. There is a home EECS page at eecs.berkeley.edu as well as division home pages at cs.berkeley.edu and ee.berkeley.edu. A few of the many improvements include:

* More modern and professional appearance
* Streamlined and consistent navigation
* Increased use of images across the site to emphasize the culture of EECS
* Clear, easy-to-find information for our current and potential industrial connections
* Content Management in Drupal so that content can be updated directly on the site

This has been a year-and-a-half-long project that started by selecting a vendor (Kalamuna) to manage the discovery, design, and implementation process. The previous site had grown organically to a considerable complexity and size, requiring a complete overhaul. A large portion of the work has been to trim down content that was redundant, obsolete, or unnecessary. We hope to foster continuous improvement with the new implementation. If you have feedback about content, navigation, or feel, please let us know at webteam@eecs.berkeley.edu

I’d like to thank several people for their Herculean efforts:

* Chairs Tsu-Jae, Mike, and Randy, for their vision, leadership, and for dedicating resources to make this project a priority.
* Jan Pardoe for leading the project and keeping the vendors busy at all times and within budget.
* Maggie Crowley for managing and adapting massive amount of content and creating new content where needed.

Internet Connectivity Issue 7/21/16

EECS was without Internet connectivity from 8:06 to 9:13 AM this morning due to a firewall issue. The then-primary firewall appears to have hung in a manner that prevented the backup from taking over until network staff arrived onsite and manually intervened.

During the outage, users and machines on the EECS network were unable to access the Internet, and Internet users were unable to access EECS resources or the EECS Web site.

We are working to determine the cause of the issue as well as ways to mitigate similar cases in the future. We are also in the process of constructing an out-of-band management infrastructure to reduce time to repair in outage situations. No further interruptions are expected at this time.
