July IRIS Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024. Various IRIS Windows and Linux servers will be patched and rebooted Tuesday or Wednesday.

PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, July 10th, at 3:00am. WINTERM may be unavailable until 10:00am Wednesday, depending on additional software updates.

Linux servers lists.eecs, iris2.eecs (for access to the network and roster databases), and login.eecs will be patched and rebooted Wednesday night. DNS servers cronus and rhea may also be briefly unavailable while rebooting at approximately 8:00pm Tuesday.

On Wednesday, July 10th, the departmental DHCP server is scheduled for downtime from 10pm to 10:30pm (actual downtime is expected to be shorter than scheduled).

Web services upgrade, Friday July 5

IRIS-provided web services will be migrated to new Red Hat 9 servers on Friday, July 5th beginning at 10am. This will affect people.eecs, www2.eecs, and all the project websites hosted by IRIS. This should be transparent to most people, but users of apps.eecs.berkeley.edu might have to upgrade their code due to new versions of the supported languages. These people have been previously contacted.

IRIS Applications offline Sunday June 30 10a-12p

The IRIS Roster and Network applications will be offline this Sunday, June 30th, from 10am-12pm. During this time the service will be migrated to a new machine. Registrations or updates for network devices and computer accounts will not be possible during this time.

Upgrading dhcp.eecs Friday, July 5

On Friday, July 5, from about noon to 2pm, we will be performing an OS upgrade for dhcp.eecs.

During this time, DHCP service will be handled by our backup DHCP server, so there should be no significant interruption of service — but no new DHCP updates will be processed (i.e. new system network registrations will not become effective until after the upgrade is complete).

Cory 3F Networks Offline, Morning of Tue. 6/25

Due to planned electrical work, all Cory Hall third floor wired and wireless networks will be offline during the morning on Tuesday, June 25th. Per facilities, power (and therefore network) will be unavailable between 7:30am and 12:30pm. The network, particularly wi-fi, may take as long as 15 minutes to fully come online after power is restored.

Soda Hall 2nd Floor Power Outage on June 13, 2024

As noted following the January 4th Soda Hall power outage, an additional power outage for the second floor of Soda Hall is being scheduled to complete a circuit breaker replacement. Electrical power to the Soda Hall second floor will be down during much of the day on Thursday, June 13, 2024. Critical systems will be down from about 6am until perhaps 5pm.

Of primary note is that the department NetApp fileservers will be down, so any systems that depend on HOME or PROJECT storage will be shutdown or nonfunctional. Services that will be unavailable during the maintenance period include: department webservice (including people.eecs, www2.eecs and all other IRIS-hosted web sites), IRIS account & network forms, login servers (login.eecs, login-mfa.eecs, winterm.eecs), print server print.eecs, and outgoing SMTP server gateway.eecs.

Any systems that remain powered-on but make use of HOME or PROJECT storage may become unresponsive during this time. Rebooting after maintenance is completed is usually recommended.

Services that will remain online and available include: DHCP, EECS Active Directory, EECS LDAP, wired networking, DNS (cronus.eecs), and maillists (lists.eecs), and the main department website eecs.berkeley.edu.

Unplanned East Campus Power Outage

Just before 6:30pm, the campus experienced a wide-spread power outage. Most of the east side of campus remains without power at the time of this writing. There is currently no estimate for when power will be restored.

IRIS services in Soda and Cory will be either shut down imminently, or will soon become unavailable, as UPS power is used up. Once power is safely restored to campus, we will work to bring services back online to the best of our abilities.

Cory 1F Network Maintenance, 5/22 10PM

Tonight at 10PM we will be rebooting an access switch which provides network service to the basement and first floor of Cory Hall. All wireless networks and some wired networks on the first floor and basement will be unavailable for a brief period.

Update: This maintenance will no longer be required due to the power outage currently affecting Cory Hall.

Linux Login Server upgrades, Fri May 24

Beginning at about 3pm Friday, May 24, we will be upgrading the EECS Linux login servers login.eecs, login-mfa.eecs, and setsecretkey.eecs, from RedHat Enterprise Linux 7 to RHEL 8.

During the upgrade process, the servers will be unavailable for general logins, and will be rebooted multiple times. We anticipate that normal login service should be available by 9pm Friday evening.
