[Read more…] about September 2020 Windows Server PatchingThis announces the upcoming change to the firewall ruleset for the 8th floor of Berkeley Way West (BWW) on the 128.32.175.0/24 network. On September 15, 2020, the network border firewall policies will be brought in line with the existing IRIS (EECS) firewall ruleset for secure production networks. This change is to help facilitate moving all IRIS networks to the campus Palo Alto firewall infrastructure. Also, going forward, emailed requests for BWW firewall exceptions will no longer be needed. The standard IRIS network registration forms will be utilized to make web servers at BWW available to the outside Internet.

There will also be sporadic brief outages to various IRIS services between 9am and 2pm due to network maintenance.
Our primary datacenter and network core will receive backup generator support and we generally expect all services to remain online throughout the day. However, we are taking the opportunity to perform a number of network maintenance items which would have otherwise necessitated multiple outages later in the year.
As a result there will be multiple brief interruptions to various services including NetApp file servers, DHCP and DNS service, and the login.eecs and winterm terminal servers. We expect each individual interruption will last for less than five minutes, and this work will be performed between 9AM – 2PM. This post will be updated when all network maintenance is complete.
After network services are fully restored, sysadmins may need to reboot their systems, restart/remount nfs file systems, etc. to get fully back online.

[Read more…] about August 2020 Windows Server PatchingThe department unix login server, login.eecs, allows access for all EECS Standard account holders via SSH. Authentication uses one’s EECS username and EECS Windows/LDAP password.
Being open for all EECS users — even those who never intend to use login.eecs — increases our chance of being attacked by brute-force methods, or abuse by those with stolen credentials. In an effort to limit our attack surface, we will be restricting who can login on login.eecs.
Beginning Tuesday, August 11, SSH access to login.eecs will be restricted to members of a new LDAP group. Anyone who has used login.eecs recently has already been added to this group.
If you would like to utilize login.eecs, and have not yet been added to this access group, please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu to request login.eecs access.
