iPhone 2.0 and WEP on EECS 802.11b Wireless

July 23, 2008 by IRIS Staff

iPhones with the new 2.0 firmware, including the new iPhone 3g, may have problems getting onto the EECS 802.11b wireless network despite having the proper WEP key entered. Users of iPhones may see an error message about an incorrect password.

The workaround for this is to enter the WEP key in hexadecimal instead of ASCII without any preceding “0x” or “$” characters in front of the key.

While some wireless clients ask that hex keys be preceded by “0x” or “$”, the iPhone does not do this and will not properly join the EECS wireless network if these preceding characters are used.

For example, if the EECS 802.11b WEP key in ASCII were “IloveAppleInc”, the hex version of the key would be “496C6F76654170706C65496E63”. (This is not the actual EECS 802.11b WEP key – it is just an example) .

Enter “496C6F76654170706C65496E63” instead of “IloveAppleInc”. Do not use “0x496C6F76654170706C65496E63” or “$496C6F76654170706C65496E63”.

If you need assistance getting your iPhone onto the EECS wireless network, please contact the EECS Helpdesk in 395 Cory Hall, x2-7777.

Router Failure

July 22, 2008 by IRIS Staff

Just before 4 PM today, a core router management module failed. The unit did try to fail over to the backup but it was not a complete cut over and some services were disrupted. We attempted to reboot the module but that caused a more massive failure in the chassis for less than 1 min. The bad module has been removed and service has been restored. We are continuing to troubleshoot the first problem with the vendor.

New Webmail interface for EECS IMAP Mail (BETA)

July 14, 2008 by IRIS Staff

There is a new web interface for the EECS IMAP mail server.

The URL is: https://webmail.eecs.berkeley.edu

This interface has a different look and feel from the old interface. It also allows the user to manage mail filters on the IMAP server. These rules are processed prior to any other rules that are in place, such as the rules on the server that processes SPAM.

Please feel free to try out this interface.

*It is currently in beta*, but will probably be announced as a production service soon.

The old webmail interface will remain at https://imap.eecs.berkeley.edu.

DHCP service unavailable

May 29, 2008 by IRIS Staff

Earlier today, around 6pm, the DHCP service ceased functioning, causing systems that obtain their IP addressing dynamically to be unable obtain an IP address to use when connecting to the network.

Most systems that use DHCP to obtain their IP address will be affected by this and will not be able to connect to the network after reboot or lengthy disconnection from the network.

Systems that use DHCP but have already obtained an address may be able to stay on the network during this service malfunction – this depends on how individual systems are configured. Systems that do not rely upon DHCP (statically configured hostnames/addresses) should be unaffected by this problem.

Staff are looking into the cause of this problem.

WINSWW to be Rebooted this Afternoon

May 27, 2008 by IRIS Staff

We suspect that WINSWW is not using the Active Directory security policy applied to all machines in the EECS domain.

We hope to resolve this issue by rebooting WINSWW at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Our apologies for the short notice.
