New Website Features: Services Status, Incident Tracker, and Streamlined News

April 1, 2008 by IRIS Staff

The most recent update to the IRIS website not only tightened up how we present news, but brought with it two new features: a **Services Status** indicator and the **Incident Tracker**.

The **Services Status** indicator is displayed at the top of the left sidebar and gives a quick overview of the general state of IRIS services at any given moment. It is color-coded by severity so you can tell immediately if any critical or routine incidents have been reported. You’ll know everything is right with the world when a green check-mark is displayed.

Clicking on the Services Status indicator takes you to the [**Incident Tracker**](/incidents). On this page, you’ll be able to see all the service incidents that haven’t yet been resolved. This is the first place to check if you’re experiencing some sort of systemic problem or want to know if any services are scheduled for maintenance.

As for the improvements to news: when you’re viewing a list of posts you’ll no longer see updates mixed in with them and incidents that have been resolved are now clearly indicated as being so.

We hope you find these new features useful and we welcome any feedback you might have.

IRIS Website Application Updates, Mar 31, 2008

March 31, 2008 by IRIS Staff

We’ll be applying some updates to the underlying application that is used by the IRIS website beginning at 11:00p.m. on March 31, 2008.

We’ll be enabling some new features and streamlining the news a bit, so look for a post detailing the changes once we’re done.

If there is any actual downtime, it will be brief, though we don’t expect to incur any.

RIS Server to be Upgraded

March 19, 2008 by IRIS Staff

The windows remote installation server (RIS) will be upgraded on Wednesday March 19th at 6:00 a.m.

During the upgrade Windows remote installation, and ris.eecs.berkeley.edu will not be available. Total downtime shouldn’t be more than an hour and RIS service will be available by 7:00 a.m.

With this upgrade Windows remote installation has changed. Upon booting to ris.eecs.berkeley.edu you will have two choices:

1. IDSG ONLY – WDS
2. Remote Installation Services

Windows deployment services (WDS) is still under development and available only to members of the IDSG group. Remote Installation Services will take you to the familiar blue pages and install Windows.

If you accidentally run WDS, just reboot your host, no changes will have been made.

See the [FAQ](/15-faq) for [instructions on using RIS](/15-faq/05-windows_2000/install-ris.html).

Please contact help@eecs if you have any trouble installing Windows from ris.eecs.berkeley.edu.

Spam blocking and filtering

March 13, 2008 by IRIS Staff

To alleviate a particularly bad state of email delays yesterday we have started blocking hosts that appear on SpamHaus XBL and SBL blacklists in the morning. The effect was not immediate, as there were huge queues already. However, later that day we have seen the email delays drop from hours down to effectively 0 and this situation continued to stay this way up until 7am today (when this mail is being sent).
