Wireless Controller Upgrade, Jan. 26 2017

We will be performing an emergency upgrade of our wireless controllers tonight beginning at 9:30PM to address a bug which has been causing periodic controller crashes that bring down the wireless network. The last outage generated by this bug was on Jan. 18, but we also experience more frequent crashes that do not affect production due to redundancy.

The controllers have the capability for a hitless upgrade (upgrade without affecting service), however we have had mixed experience with this feature in the past. We expect there may be an outage of 10-15 minutes while the controllers reload after the upgrade.

This maintenance will affect wireless networks in Soda, Cory, Sutardja Dai, Blum, and Jacobs Halls, as well as the Calvin Lab, BWRC, and BiD Lab in HMMB.

Brief Wireless Network outage

All wireless networks were unavailable for approximately 12-15 minutes due to a simultaneous crash of our primary and backup wireless controllers.

The controllers recovered and APs automatically rejoined; all APs should be back online now.

We are investigating the cause of the crash and any possible steps we can take to prevent this from occurring again.

Cory Hall networking down as of early Dec 10

At about 1:30am Saturday, monitoring software indicates that our link from Soda Hall to Cory Hall went down, resulting in all Cory Hall hosts being offline/unreachable. Staff will investigate possible hardware failures, and hope to restore service later today.

EECS-Secure and EECS-RADtest authentication in all locations (not just Cory Hall) were also affected due to a single point of failure located in Cory Hall, which is set to be rectified in January.

Emergency Reboot, Nanolab 3/4 Switch 8/22/16

We will be performing an emergency reboot of the switch which provides service to the third/fourth floors of the Sutardja Dai Nanolab at 12:15 PM today, in order to clear some bad state left over from this weekend’s upgrades. The third and fourth floors of the Nanolab will be without network connectivity for approximately five minutes.

Access Switch Upgrades, Sat-Sun 8/20-21

At the suggestion of our vendor, we will be upgrading various access switches to the latest supported software version. This will affect wired and wireless clients in Soda, Cory, and Sutardja Dai Halls, and wireless users in Blum Hall.

The first set of these upgrades will take place Saturday night at 10PM and will occur in waves. We are upgrading sixteen switches in four waves and expect to be done by 11:30.

The second will take place on Sunday night at 10PM, will affect a smaller group of switches, and should be done by 10:30.

Brief network interruptions (on the order of five minutes) are expected for users in these locations while switches reboot. Most locations will experience a single interruption, but some will require two. Where possible, we will stagger reboots in an attempt to maintain Wi-Fi coverage.

Wireless Network Maintenance, Fri. 6/17/16 10PM

We will be performing a major software upgrade of the wireless controllers at 10PM on Friday, June 17th. This upgrade includes a number of needed security and feature updates.

This will affect wireless networks in the following buildings:
Soda Hall, Cory Hall, Sutardja Dai Hall, Blum Hall, Jacobs Hall, Calvin Laboratory

During the upgrade all wireless networks will be unavailable. We have not upgraded this platform before so we are uncertain how long the outage will last, but we anticipate a minimum of 10 minutes and (barring catastrophes) a maximum of around a half hour.
