IRIS

The IRIS website
will be moved to new hardware on Sunday, September 17, 2006. This involves migrating a large amount of data from our Oracle database to the new database server, and consequently the IRIS applications that depend on the database will be unavailable from midnight to 8pm during this migration. We expect the main IRIS website will remain up for most of this time, but brief outages will be noticeable during the transition.

The move to new hardware will greatly speed up our database applications, and in the long run will increase the reliability of our web services.

There was a temporary outage of windows access to both coeus and project today between about 1PM and 2PM. This is the same problem as last time. We are still trying to find the root cause and have trouble tickets in with the vendor.

IDSG appreciates you patience during these outages.

We will be rebooting one of the switches on the first floor of Cory at 08:00 hrs tomorrow (Thursday, September 6) morning.

This should only take a few minutes and will not be noticed by most computers.

There was an unexpected loss of coeus and project windows access between 5PM and 6PM Tuesday on 5 Sep, 2006. The exact cause of this problem has not been determined, and IDSG is continuing to investigate the matter. The vendor has been notified of the problem.

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, September 12th.

HERMES, PRINT, RIS and WINSWW will be down for patching Wednesday, September 13, from 3:00p–5:00p.

macserver.eecs.berkeley.edu, which hosts the Mac software warehouse, will be down for maintenance at this time as well.

This afternoon, we experienced a DOS attack that was disruptive to our network. The attack caused a software failure on one of our core routers and we had to manually fail over to the backup management module. Additionally, this attack caused a problem with one of our name servers, Rhea. This attack likely was the cause of some wireless controller crashes today as well. We have blocked the offending attacker at the firewall. Network services are now coming back up.

Today, August 24, 2006, Apple issued a recall for some of the batteries found in its iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 laptops.

The batteries are being recalled because they pose a safety threat to users due to severe overheating.

To determine if your battery has been recalled or to exchange a recalled battery with Apple, use their battery exchange program.

All, it seems that late this afternoon, we lost routing updates from the campus routers. We have put in a temporary default route as a work-around and campus/Internet connectivity has been restored. We have opened a ticket with campus to see what the problem is. Again, we regret the inconvenience.

Late this morning we had an unscheduled network outage which appears to be rooted in our firewall. The primary unit stopped passing traffic for an, as yet, unknown reason. However, we were able to manually switch to the back-up firewall and traffic has been restored. We are still investigating the cause of the outage. I regret the inconvenience.

We will reboot the switch(Salp3A) on the 3rd floor of Soda on Wed morning Aug 16, 2006. There will be brief network outages at 7:30AM. It should take less than 5 mins.

This will affect users who use wired connection on the 3rd floor with cable-ids starting with 3A-. Since our wireless network feeds into our switched infrastructure, there will also be a couple of brief outages to the wireless network on the 3rd floor of Soda.
