Create and Manage LDAP Groups with Regroup

November 17, 2008 by IRIS Staff

[Regroup](/regroup) is a new application that enables you to create and manage groups on the EECS LDAP server.

What can you do with an LDAP group? Plenty, including:

* [Restrict access to a webpage](/10-services/web-technotes.html#auth).
* Define the membership of a [Sympa](https://lists.eecs.berkeley.edu/sympa) mailing list.
* Restrict login access to *nix hosts.
* Restrict access to various LDAP-enabled applications.

To get started, [login to Regroup](/regroup) with your LDAP username and password.

Mailing list messages delayed

November 7, 2008 by Rob McNicholas

The EECS mailing list server, lists.eecs.berkeley.edu, ran out of memory and stopped processing messages around 4am on Friday, November 7. It was restarted around 9am.

During the outage, the server was accepting incoming messages but not redistributing them. Once it was restarted all messages were then delivered. No messages should have been lost.

We will be adding more memory to the server in the next day or two, which should prevent this problem from occurring again.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

IMAP E-Mail Migration — PLEASE READ

November 6, 2008 by IRIS Staff

IDSG is planning on moving all IMAP accounts to a new more powerful server beginning tonight Thursday 6 Nov at 9PM.

During the hours of 9PM to 7AM IDSG will move as many users as possible from the old server to the new one.

We will begin with the users that have the smaller mailboxes. Users that are moved will be notified that the move is done.

You should check your mailbox expire settings at: https://webmail.EECS.Berkeley.EDU:442 to make sure they are correct.

What you might experience:

If your mailbox is in the process of being moved, you will not be able to read mail. You will logged out if you are logged in when the move starts for you and you will not be able to login again until the move is complete. The move process can take from 1 minute to more than an hour (for mailboxes that have several GB of mail).

The plan is to move the large mailboxes beginning Friday the 8th at 9PM through Monday the 11th at 7AM. Those users will be contacted in a separate e-mail so they can be more prepared. Unfortunately, we will not be able to give an exact time for any of the moves.

IDSG wishes to express our gratitude for your patience during the last few weeks while we sort out this problem.

Both servers are now available, hermes.eecs will be retired on Wednesday, November 19th. Please take this time to move your data from hermes.eecs and test out winterm.eecs

To use winterm.eecs, make sure you are running the latest RDC from Microsoft for your platform.

Remote print queues can be used on winterm.eecs via the newer RDC version. Many printers have been added locally to winterm.eecs where Windows Server 2008 drivers allowed.
