winsww has not rebooted properly the last two rounds of patching, and it needs to be tested before March 12th.
**winsww** will be reboot on **Thursday, March 6th**, between **6:00 and 7:00 am**.

IRIS Website and Mailing Lists Offline Briefly Due to Maintenance
The IRIS Website and Sympa Mailing Lists will be offline briefly beginning at 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 due to server maintenance.
The machine serving as a web and database server for both services needs to be patched and rebooted. Total downtime should be less than 30 minutes. Any messages sent to one of the Sympa mailing lists during this time will be queued and delivered once service is restored.

Loss of Connections to Coeus and Project
Unfortunately, the changes we made during the scheduled maintenance window to provide better redundancy caused an unforeseen loss of connectivity to our NIS servers on one network. This resulted in loss of mounts to Coeus and Project. We rolled back the changes and service has been restored. We will try again at a later date after we resolve the issue. Unfortunately, the issue was not discovered until after our scheduled downtime was over. We regret the inconvenience this caused.

AirBears/AirBearsBeyond Wireless Outage
AirBears and AirBearsBeyond service went down last evening and magically came back about 03:00 this morning. All clients were unable to get a lease. IS&T is investigating the Soda Hall Access Manager again as this has happened before in recent weeks and is still a mystery. All EECS WLANs were unaffected.

February Server Patching
Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, Feb. 12th, 2008.
PRINT, RIS and WINSWW will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, Feb 13th, at 3:00 am.
HERMES and macserver.eecs will be down for patching and maintenance Wednesday, Feb 13th, from 3:00p – 5:00p.

LDAP Server Issues
The departmental mail server (imap.eecs) and LDAP servers should now be working mostly properly. However, there are a few unresolved technical problems. You may encounter SSL certificate validation errors on our LDAP server (ldap.eecs and ldap.cs). As such, it may not be completely reliable for the remainder of today, and possibly across this weekend as well. We are actively working on solving the underlying problem, and will post an update as soon as we can.
No incoming or outgoing email was lost.
Technical background: Earlier today, the SSL certificates on our LDAP servers expired. This caused the LDAP daemon on ldap.eecs to hang, and refuse new connections. This cacscaded into a failure of part of IMAP system, and the IMAP daemon on imap.eecs similarly hung. We’ve managed to restart the daemons on both servers. Unfortunately, we’re running into a problem on the LDAP server, and are unable to install new, un-expired SSL certificates. As a result, we’re not completely confident that our LDAP servers won’t crash again, and take the IMAP server with it. Again, we’re continuously working on trying to fix this.

Login to edit Whitelists/Blacklists on SPAM appliances (bc1/2) broken
The login to the Spam appliances is currently broken. This is apparently due to a software upgrade. This problem has been reported to the vendor.
Users will be unable to add, remove or change their e-mail Whitelists/Blacklists.
This does not affect operation of any current e-mail Whitelists/Blacklists.

IRIS Website Offline Tonight for Server Migration
The IRIS website will be offline for about 30 minutes this evening (Wed Feb 06) in order to redeploy parts of the site using the [Mongrel](http://mongrel.rubyforge.org) HTTP server.
Currently, the portions of the site written in Ruby are being served using fcgid, which isn’t the most stable option. The switch to Mongrel will bring more stability to the site and be faster to boot!
