EECS Network Scheduled Outage on Jan. 3-4 2015

January 3, 2015 by Derek Calderon

There will be a full scheduled outage of the EECS network from 10AM – 8PM on Saturday, January 3, 2015. There may be additional contingency outages on Sunday the 4th, but we are unable to confirm the need for additional outages at this time. During this window, the entire EECS network will be offline as we transition to our new routing core.

Expected service impacts:

– Internet connectivity will be unavailable on all EECS networks
– All EECS Wired* networking will be offline or unreliable
– All EECS Wireless** networks will be unavailable (the networks will continue to be visible in some locations, however the underlying transit networks will be offline)
– The BWRC will be isolated from EECS and unable to access the Internet or non-BWRC-hosted resources
– EECS hosted services (such as NFS project space and home directories) will be unavailable

We apologize for any inconvenience that this maintenance will cause. Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
EECS/IRIS Network Group

*EECS Wired locations include Soda, Cory, and Sutardja Dai Halls, and the BWRC

**EECS Wireless locations include Soda, Cory, Sutardja Dai, Calvin, and Blum Halls, as well as the Sibley Auditorium, certain areas of the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, and the BWRC

Brief Wireless Outage in Cory and SD Halls

December 9, 2014 by Derek Calderon

There was a brief loss of wireless service to Cory and Sutardja Dai Halls due to a bad configuration push, which caused the APs in those buildings to lose contact with the wireless controller. Service has since been restored.

Scheduled Maintenance for Wireless Authentication Services

November 26, 2014 by Derek Calderon

On Wednesday, November 26th at 4-5PM we will be installing updated TLS certificates on our primary wireless authentication (RADIUS) server and on the EECS-Guest web authentication portal. Due system redundancy, no outages are expected, except for a possible brief interruption in EECS-Guest authentication. Existing connections will not be lost, but there may be a short period in which users cannot initiate new connections to EECS-Guest. In this event, we recommend the use of CalVisitor until EECS-Guest is responding again.

Scheduled Maintenance for Wireless Authentication Server

November 5, 2014 by Derek Calderon

On Wednesday, November 5 at 1PM, we will be performing scheduled maintenance on the primary wireless authentication (aka RADIUS) server, etips1.eecs. The maintenance window is scheduled to end at 2PM.

EECS-Secure will not be affected during the maintenance, as the secondary server will be available to process authentication requests. However, the secondary server is currently unable to process requests for EECS-Guest, and as a result EECS-Guest will NOT be accepting new connections. Existing sessions should not be disconnected, but any new EECS-Guest sessions will fail to authenticate during the maintenance. We recommend that visitors use CalVisitor as a workaround during this time.

Please direct any questions, comments, or concerns to help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

eduroam now available in EECS

November 4, 2014 by Derek Calderon

The eduroam wireless network is now available in EECS. eduroam is a worldwide wireless network which is shared across many participating institutions. Visitors from other institutions will be able to log on to eduroam while at Berkeley, and anyone from Berkeley who is visiting another institution can log into eduroam using their AirBears 2 key.

For more details on eduroam, please see Berkeley ISTs eduroam information page at http://ist.berkeley.edu/airbears#eduroam or the eduroam website at eduroam.org.

For a general overview of campus-provided wireless offerings (not including EECS networks), please see https://kb.berkeley.edu/page.php?id=27815

If you have any questions, concerns, or issues with eduroam, please send a message to help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Thanks,

EECS/IRIS Network Group

CalVisitor Wireless Now Available in EECS

October 30, 2014 by Derek Calderon

The CalVisitor guest wireless network is now available in EECS.

UC Berkeley Students, Faculty, and Staff are strongly encouraged to continue to use AirBears2 or the IRIS wireless
networks instead of the CalVisitor guest wireless network.

CalVisitor does not use authentication or encryption and does not require host registration. CalVisitor provides access to all websites via HTTP and HTTPS (ports 80/443) and to most common VPN services. However, other services may not function. CalVisitor provides users with access to registered websites on the IRIS networks.

For more details on the CalVisitor service, please see Berkeley IST’s CalVisitor information page at https://ist.berkeley.edu/airbears/calvisitor

For a general overview of campus-provided wireless offerings (not including EECS networks), please see https://kb.berkeley.edu/page.php?id=27815

If you have any questions, concerns, or issues with CalVisitor, please send a message to help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Thanks,

EECS/IRIS Network Group

P.S. For those who are curious, we expect to roll out eduroam within the next couple of weeks.

Unscheduled Wireless Outage, HMMB and Sibley Auditorium

October 20, 2014 by Derek Calderon

We are currently experiencing an unscheduled wireless outage in some locations in the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, as well as in the Sibley Auditorium in the Bechtel Engineering Center. The outage is due to a campus zone router crash, and many campus-managed wired and wireless networks are also affected.

IST/Telecom is working to restore service and we will update this news item when service has been restored. We apologize for any issues caused by this interruption.

Brief Scheduled Outage for EECS Wireless

September 19, 2014 by Derek Calderon

There will be a brief scheduled outage of all EECS wireless networks on this Friday, September 19th, in order to perform a minor configuration change which will require a reboot of the wireless controllers. The maintenance will begin at 6:30AM and is expected to be complete by 7AM.

This is scheduled to coincide with a related maintenance being performed by IST on their wireless controllers, which serve the rest of campus. Information on the IST scheduled outage can be found at ucbsystems.org, CMR #3214.

This outage will affect all wireless networks (including AirBears) in all EECS locations: Soda, Cory, Sutardja Dai, and Blum Halls, as well as the Calvin Lab and the BWRC, and some areas of the Hearst Memorial Mining Building.

For questions, concerns, or comments, please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Thanks,

EECS Wireless Network Upgrades, Outages, and Changes

August 30, 2014 by Derek Calderon

On Saturday, August 30th, between 11AM and 6PM, we will be replacing the EECS wireless controllers with newer models. As a result, all wireless networks in all EECS locations will be offline during the upgrade. The wired network will not be affected.

Networks affected: EECS, EECS-Secure, EECS-Open, EECS-Guest, EECS-Robonet, EECS-Viper, 326capture, 540capture, AirBears, AirBears2, attwifi.

Locations affected: Soda Hall, Cory Hall, Sutardja Dai Hall, Calvin Lab, Blum Hall, Sibley Auditorium, Hearst Memorial Mining Building

Additionally, the following changes are being made to EECS wireless network offerings:

EECS: this network will be renamed to EECS-PSK and the security protocol will be changed from WEP to WPA2-PSK, which is much more secure. The preshared key (password) used to access the network will not change.

EECS-Open: this network will no longer be offered.

326capture and 540capture: these networks are being merged into a single network called EECS-Capture. The preshared key will not change.

Simons: the Simons SSID will no longer be offered.

Please direct any questions or concerns to help@eecs.berkeley.edu.
