Web and mailing list server patching, Apr 10 at 7am

April 10, 2013 by Rob McNicholas

The department’s web server (www.eecs, www.cs), mailing list server (lists.eecs), wiki server (wiki.eecs), application server (apps.eecs) and jabber server (jabber.eecs) will be restarted Wednesday, April 10 at 7am.

On Tuesday evening these servers will have operating system patches installed which require a restart. They will be restarted automatically at 7am Wednesday morning and should be back in service by 7:15am.

These servers will now be patched (and rebooted if necessary) on the morning following first Tuesday of each month, the same schedule as our Windows servers.

Storage Migration

July 12, 2011 by IRIS Staff

home.eecs and project.eecs will be down from 8pm to midnight on July
12th, 2011 to be migrated to new equipment. The actual downtime is
expected to be much smaller.

The rest of this notice is primarily targeted at system administrators.
If you choose to read this and have questions about some of the
technical details, please contact your system administrator(s).

1) NFS exports will change. AMD/automaps will be updated accordingly.
Most changes will be straightforward. Some project spaces will be
handled differently, see the details below. Note that this implies
a re-mount.

    Old                        New
home:/eecs/<user>     home:/vol/home/eecs/<user>
project:/proj/<name>  project:/vol/proj/<name>

2) CIFS shares will not change (except for the specially-handled project
spaces). However, SMB2 will be enabled (including durable filehandles).

3) The following project spaces will be migrated differently:

     Old NFS export New NFS export
project:/proj/aneureuther       cluster:/vol/cproj/aneureuther
project:/proj/b-cam             cluster:/vol/cproj/b-cam
project:/proj/brass             cluster:/vol/cproj/brass
project:/proj/daw-a             cluster:/vol/cproj/daw-a
project:/proj/demmel-d          cluster:/vol/cproj/demmel-d
project:/proj/graham            cluster:/vol/cproj/graham
project:/proj/hilfinger-a       cluster:/vol/cproj/hilfinger-a
project:/proj/iram              cluster:/vol/cproj/iram
project:/proj/jordan-a          cluster:/vol/cproj/jordan-a
project:/proj/millennium        cluster:/vol/cproj/millennium
project:/proj/neureuther        cluster:/vol/cproj/neureuther
project:/proj/neureuther-flcc   cluster:/vol/cproj/neureuther-flcc
project:/proj/neureuther-intel  cluster:/vol/cproj/neureuther-intel
project:/proj/now               cluster:/vol/cproj/now
project:/proj/parlab            cluster:/vol/cproj/parlab
project:/proj/radlab            cluster:/vol/cproj/radlab
project:/proj/tinyos            cluster:/vol/cproj/tinyos
project:/proj/titanium          cluster:/vol/cproj/titanium
project:/proj/vision            cluster:/vol/cproj/vision
project:/proj/vision-b          cluster:/vol/cproj/vision-b
project:/proj/vision-c          cluster:/vol/cproj/vision-c
project:/proj/vision-e          cluster:/vol/cproj/vision-e
project:/proj/yelick            cluster:/vol/cproj/yelick
project:/proj/yelick-old        cluster:/vol/cproj/yelick-old

If the project space in the above list had CIFS share(s) associated with
it, the said share(s) will retain their name, but will now live on
\\\\\\CLUSTER\<share_name>.

If you have questions or concerns about the timing or technical details,
then please email me at aculich@eecs.berkeley.edu or drop by 319 Soda;
as many of you know, Fred Archibald has retired and I have taken over
his role managing IDSG, so whether or not you have storage questions,
feel free to drop by my office to say hello and introduce yourself.

UPS Installation/Various System Outages

March 21, 2011 by IRIS Staff

Delivery is expected Monday for our new UPS which will be installed in the 290 Soda Hall server room. Some services will be down for short periods on Tuesday while they are moved off of room power and onto temporary power. Later in the week, there will be a second outage while those machines are moved onto the new UPS. Additionally, there may be a longer outage of our storage systems while some upgrades are done.

While I realize that this post is somewhat vague, a lot depends on exactly when the UPS is delivered and how long it takes to install it. I will be posting more refined notes to narrow down the scope of what services will be out (and when) as time goes on.

While we realize that there may be some inconveniences for some, please bear with us as we strive update our services and minimize outages for the future

Brief outages to a number of services, *rescheduled* Dec 20, 5-7pm

December 20, 2010 by Rob McNicholas

A number of Department services will experience brief outages between 5pm and 7pm on Thursday, Dec 16th for SSL Certificate renewal. These services are:

* www.eecs / www.cs and other IRIS-hosted websites
* lists.eecs mailing list web interface
* jabber.eecs IM server
* iris.eecs IRIS website
* wiki.eecs IRIS Wiki hosting

No service should be down for more than 10 minutes.

[SSL Certificates](https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/SSL_certificate) are needed to secure connections to the servers. They typically expire every 1, 2, or 3 years. We are installing 3-year certificates at this time.

Advanced users may want to know that we are switching to a new Certificate Authority at this time. Please see [the Nov 4th IRIS News article](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/news/4591-new-ssl-certificate-service) for information on this new CA.

Major Upgrades on June 6, 2009

June 6, 2009 by IRIS Staff

On Saturday, June 6th, we will be doing major upgrades to some of our
backend systems. This work will start at 10 am. We expect that some of
services will start coming back up in about 3 hours, but due to the
complexity and extensiveness of the upgrades, the downtime may extend well
beyond the 3 hour mark. These upgrades are imperative for the continuing
reliability of the infrastructure services. We apologize for the
inconvenience.

The following services will be affected:

* Home directories
* Project space
* UNIX SWW
* Departmental/IDSG web servers
* IMAP (due to the additional work, IMAP will be down for an additional 2 hours)
* argus/login (UNIX login servers)
* Department websites www.eecs / www.cs and all hosted project sites
* Department mailing lists hosted on lists.eecs
* buffy and all ACG applications
* wikis hosted on wiki.eecs
* Department’s jabber server, jabber.eecs

Coeus/Project Downtime

August 20, 2008 by IRIS Staff

Attention System Administrators,

On Wednesday, August 20th from 6am-8am, IDSG will be migrating production file service of home directories and project space to the new NetApp filers. There will be downtime during this migration that will impact the majority of users in the department. Please evaluate the impact for your users and notify them of those details. A much shorter public announcement will be going out soon to the entire EECS community indicating that local System Administrators will be letting them know of any specific information as to how it will impact their work.

The following services will be affected:

– coeus
– project
– sww (not winsww)
– argus
– www.eecs and www.cs web servers
– the IRIS website

The following changes apply:

1. COEUS

– coeus.EECS.Berkeley.EDU will be replaced by home.EECS.Berkeley.EDU.

– NFS access will change from coeus:/vol/vol0/eecs/username to home:/eecs/username

– The amd and automaps will be appropriately changed.

– CIFS access will change from \\\\\\COEUS\HOME\username to
\\\\\\HOME\username

– The old hostname coeus will be a CNAME to home.EECS.Berkeley.EDU until September 20th.

2. PROJECT

– NFS access will change from project:/vol/vol[02]/projspace to project:/proj/projspace

**NOTE**: A few mount points will change in a different way. See the end of this announcement for details.

**NOTE2**: If your project spaces are merged, the details will be worked out with you directly outside of this announcement.

– The amd and automaps will be appropriately changed.

– CIFS share names will not be affected.

This announcement may be followed by additional updates if additional technical details need to be publicized. Certain requests may be delayed beyond the normal response time (e.g. amd/automap change requests, new user creation, project space creation, etc.) during the 2 weeks prior to the migration.

The downtimes for different services will be different. There will be one or more additional announcements as services get restored to allow early access to the appropriate systems. E.g. the actual downtime for coeus/home is expected to be only a few minutes.

This list will receive notice when access is restored.

Sysadmins should be ready to reboot systems that need to remount filesystems between 7:30 and 8 AM. CIFS access should resume during that time as well. The CIFS share names will not change and therefore should not require a reboot for those systems.

Be advised that there are a number of follow-up tasks after the outage, which could result in slow response from these systems.

If you experience problems during or after the outage, or have
additional questions – please contact Helpdesk at help@eecs or 2-7777 or 395 Cory.
