A number of Department services will experience brief outages between 5pm and 7pm on Thursday, Dec 16th for SSL Certificate renewal. These services are:
* www.eecs / www.cs and other IRIS-hosted websites
* lists.eecs mailing list web interface
* jabber.eecs IM server
* iris.eecs IRIS website
* wiki.eecs IRIS Wiki hosting
No service should be down for more than 10 minutes.
[SSL Certificates](https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/SSL_certificate) are needed to secure connections to the servers. They typically expire every 1, 2, or 3 years. We are installing 3-year certificates at this time.
Advanced users may want to know that we are switching to a new Certificate Authority at this time. Please see [the Nov 4th IRIS News article](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/news/4591-new-ssl-certificate-service) for information on this new CA.

Due to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Wednesday, December 23 to Friday, Dec 31, reopening on Monday, January 3, 2011.
All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis. IRIS staff will be taking advantage of the holiday to do maintenance on some systems which will result in scattered outages, but any such downtime will be separately announced and posted on the IRIS website.
The IRIS Helpdesk will be closed beginning December 23rd, and will reopen on January 3rd. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (2-7777) or emailed to help@eecs, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until January 3rd.
Requests for new IRIS accounts that are received after Dec 17th will be processed on January 3rd, 2011.
During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (imail.eecs, inst.eecs, cory.eecs, mamba.eecs and fileservice.eecs). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs over the break. If you are unable to contact inst@eecs, you can leave a message at 643-6141. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until January 3rd.
We recommend that all desktop computers be shutdown during the Energy Curtailment Period. If your Windows computer needs to stay on during the break, we recommend that you check with your system administrator to ensure that Automatic Updates are enabled with the option “Automatically download the updates and install them on the schedule that I specify”, with a daily update schedule.
Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:
* Instructional Computing Environment: inst@eecs
* Research / Staff Computing Environment: help@eecs
Enjoy your holiday break!

UC Berkeley is a member of the [InCommon](http://www.incommonfederation.org/cert/) federation. One benefit of our membership is unlimited free SSL certificates for berkeley.edu hosts.
IRIS staff have been delegated the ability to create InCommon-Comodo SSL certificates for the subdomains used on the IRIS networks.
If you are the registered system administrator of a device on the IRIS network, please use [this webform](https://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/forms/cert-request.html) to submit CSRs to IRIS staff instead of contacting calnet-pki@lists.b.e.
