Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, February 8th, 2022. PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, February 9th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, February 9th, depending on additional software updates.

Dept NetApp Filer Maintenance, 3pm January 3, 2022

We will be performing an OS upgrade on our departmental NetApp filers (upgrading from OnTAP version 9.7 to 9.8), which will require a service outage from 3pm to 9pm on Monday, January 3, 2022. All NFS and CIFS access to the filer (home and project storage) will be down during that time. Services (e.g. webservice) that depend on this storage will also be down or unresponsive.

While we are scheduling a 6 hour maintenance window, we will attempt to minimize the service outage if possible.

When maintenance is completed, NFS clients should automatically resume normal operation. CIFS clients (such as Windows and MacOS) may need to remount filesystems, or simply be rebooted.

IT Support During Winter 2021 Energy Curtailment

Due to the Winter Holidays, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Thursday, December 23 to Friday, December 31, reopening on Monday, January 3, 2022. 

All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis.

The IRIS Helpdesk office will be closed Monday, December 22 through Friday, January 7, re-opening on January 10. If you need assistance between December 20-22 or January 3-7, please email help@eecs, and we may be able to schedule an appointment with you. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs during the campus closure period, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until January 3.

Requests for IRIS network support or new IRIS accounts that are received after 5pm December 21 may not be processed until January 3, 2022.

During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (for details, see the Instructional website). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until January 3.

Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:

Cory Hall Network Outage, 10/26/21

We are investigating a network outage affecting Cory Hall which began at about 8am.

Update: The malfunctioning switch was repaired and service was restored as of 9:22 AM.

Recommendation: Delay Upgrading to MacOS Monterey and Windows 11

As with any major OS release, we recommend a cautious approach, especially where your primary device is concerned. Major releases often bring new compatibility or support issues, which may take some time for the vendor to address with patches and updates.

Windows 11 was released recently, and MacOS Monterey is being released today, Monday, October 25. We encourage you to delay upgrading your systems to these new releases, until after such time as IT staff have tested them in our EECS and campus environment.


UPDATE (12/22/2021): As announced campus-wide yesterday by our CIO, Jenn Stringer, both MacOS Monterey and Windows 11 seem to have no compatibility issues with campus applications and tools, including wifi and the VPN. This matches the experience of our local staff.

Cory Hall Network Outage, 9/17/21

The Cory Hall network was offline from about 12:29 – 12:40 due to a malfunction in the building core switch. The issue has been resolved.
