End of Service for EECS-Guest, EECS-Robonet, and legacy AirBears

July 12, 2016 by Derek Calderon

Due to low usage in recent years, combined with a desire to improve overall wireless network performance by removing unused networks, we will be retiring the EECS-Guest and EECS-Robonet wireless networks on July 29. The AirBears network was retired on July 1.

We have already retired EECS-Guest in buildings where it was not being used, and service will be ended in all locations on the 29th. Please use the CalVisitor wireless network for guests without EECS or AirBears accounts. If you are having trouble using CalVisitor, or have guests which require applications that don’t work on CalVisitor, please contact us.

If you are a member of an academic group in Cory Hall that relies on EECS-Robonet but has managed to slip under our radar, please contact us for alternate solutions.

Finally, on the first of July, we followed campus IT’s lead in ceasing to broadcast the legacy AirBears wireless network, which was formally retired in August 2015. All AirBears users should now be using AirBears2.

If you have questions, comments, or concerns about any of the above service retirements, please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Wireless Network Maintenance, Fri. 6/17/16 10PM

June 17, 2016 by Derek Calderon

We will be performing a major software upgrade of the wireless controllers at 10PM on Friday, June 17th. This upgrade includes a number of needed security and feature updates.

This will affect wireless networks in the following buildings:
Soda Hall, Cory Hall, Sutardja Dai Hall, Blum Hall, Jacobs Hall, Calvin Laboratory

During the upgrade all wireless networks will be unavailable. We have not upgraded this platform before so we are uncertain how long the outage will last, but we anticipate a minimum of 10 minutes and (barring catastrophes) a maximum of around a half hour.

Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu with any questions or concerns about this maintenance outage.

Cory Hall Server Net Maintenance, 6/2/16 9PM

June 2, 2016 by Derek Calderon

We will be performing maintenance on the Cory Hall restricted and server networks tonight at 9PM. Machines on the 128.32.244.0/25 and 169.229.60.128/25 networks (primarily, machines located in 165 Cory) will experience a brief loss of connectivity which we expect to last for less than 10 minutes.

The purpose of this maintenance is to migrate the default gateways for those subnets to a different router to address a possible traffic hairpinning issue. No reconfiguration will be necessary by sysadmins and there should be no visible lasting effect (other than reduced packet loss and/or latency on these networks).

Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions or concerns about this maintenance outage.

EECS Website Outage due to DDoS, 4/8/16

April 8, 2016 by Derek Calderon

There was a brief outage of the EECS Website this afternoon due to an apparent DDoS attack which overwhelmed the network border firewall. A temporary workaround was put in place and the website is back online.

If you’re still noticing problems, please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Jacobs Hall Wi-Fi Issues and Maintenance 3/14/16 10PM

March 14, 2016 by Derek Calderon

The wireless networks in Jacobs Hall are currently malfunctioning due to a defect in the new code which was applied on Friday night. This defect has disabled the wireless network by preventing the APs from powering on fully. Staff are currently implementing a hardware based workaround which will bring the APs online for the afternoon.

We have identified a newer version that closes this particular defect, and confirmed with campus IST that it does work as expected. This upgrade will be applied tonight at 10PM and will involve a brief (~2 minute) downtime for the wired and wireless networks in Jacobs Hall.

Scheduled Storage Outage, Fri. 3/11/16 10PM

March 11, 2016 by Derek Calderon

This Friday at 10PM we will be doing a software upgrade on the switch which provides connectivity for the EECS storage infrastructure. This upgrade is to address an issue with in-band management of the switch.

All storage services (home directories, project storage, etc.) will be briefly unavailable during the upgrade. Past experience suggests that this downtime will only last approximately five minutes. We strongly recommend that you save and close all open files in home and project spaces before 10PM on Friday. Machines with permanent NFS mounts may need to be rebooted after the maintenance is complete.

Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu with any questions or concerns.

Jacobs Hall Network Maintenance, 3/11/16 10PM

March 10, 2016 by Derek Calderon

We will be performing a software upgrade on the Jacobs Hall switch on this Friday, the 11th, at 10PM. This upgrade will address an issue with in-band management of the switch.

We expect all wired and wireless networks in Jacobs Hall to be unavailable for five to ten minutes while the upgrade is performed.

Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu with any questions or concerns.

BWRC Wi-Fi Maintenance, 3/3/16 7AM

March 3, 2016 by Derek Calderon

We will be performing Wi-Fi upgrades at BWRC on Thursday morning to address a critical security vulnerability and also to upgrade the access points. The wireless network will be unavailable during this time and should be fully operational by 8AM.

The new access points will support 802.11ac with 80MHz channels, and will also provide increased coverage and signal performance.

If you have any questions about either of these upgrades, please email networks@eecs.berkeley.edu.

Wireless Maintenance – All Locations, 1/13/16

January 13, 2016 by Derek Calderon

We are recalibrating the system which determines wireless AP transmit power. The procedure requires us to reset the radios several times, which will cause any client machines to disconnect.

We will make the changes separately on each frequency band to attempt to reduce interruptions to the wireless service.
