Firmware upgrade: EECS border router

July 14, 2009 by Janet Shu

Tuesday July 14th at 7:00AM, we will be upgrading software on the EECS department border router. During the outage, all EECS networks will be disconnected from the Internet, including Soda, Cory, Sutardja Dai,BWRC, and portions of HMMB. The work should only take a few minutes, but we’re reserving a 30-minute window in case of problems.

Please plan accordingly.

Cory Router to Undergo Code Maintenance

July 7, 2009 by IRIS Staff

On Tuesday July 7th at 6:30am, the main Cory Router will undergo code maintenance till 7am. This will affect ALL network activity in Cory Hall with the exception of a few hard wired ports in 2nd floor campus classrooms which are connected directly to the campus network.

If all goes well, the outage will only be for a few minutes and may not
even be noticed, but there are no guarantees.

Network Services Outage

June 9, 2009 by IRIS Staff

We will be doing a code upgrade and some brief tests on the switch that hosts most EECS servers and services on Tuesday, June 9th. We have scheduled a downtime from 06:00-07:30 but we are hoping to keep outages to much less than that. The new code is supposed to correct the software malfunction that caused some recent unscheduled outages to our servers. While the service affected says “wired networking”, all services are likely to be affected.

All work was completed successfully.

Network Maintenance for EECS network May 27th

May 27, 2009 by Janet Shu

We will sync network firmware and also upgrade the BootROM for one router in Soda 2nd floor (soda-server8810)on next Wed May 27,2009. We expect that there might be brief network outages between 6:00AM to 7:45AM.

This router serves several department servers and this will affect users who use network at that time. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Please make your plans accordingly.

Network & Infrastructure Failure

May 21, 2009 by IRIS Staff

There was a software failure of the switch that serves many EECS services in Soda Hall this evening. That switch was rebooted restoring network connectivity to those servers but there was also a separate fiber channel failure involving home.eecs and project.eecs which both crashed. Work is ongoing to restore those services.

Sutardja Dai Hall switch updates

May 18, 2009 by IRIS Staff

We’ve experienced unexpected blade reboots and multicast errors on some of the new switches in Sutardja Dai Hall. Per the vendor’s suggestion, I’ll be upgrading these to a newer software release.

Subnets Affected:
128.32.156.0/24, 128.32.247.0/25, 169.229.14.0/24, 169.229.222.0/23

The code revisions are close, so we expect to be able to perform a hitless upgrade; there should be no perceivable disruption. Nevertheless, I’m scheduling a 45 minute maintenance window (1715-1800) in case of problems.

network maintenance for BWRC network

May 14, 2009 by Janet Shu

We will upgrade the new image code for two BWRC switches on this Thursday May 14,2009. There will be brief network outages from 7:00AM to 7:10AM.

This will affect users who use wired connection in the BWRC lab and some machines that are connected to summit226-1 switch. Wireless in BWRC will not be affected. This upgrade should take less than 2 mins.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Please make your plans accordingly.

Planned Sutardja Dai Hall electrical shutdown

May 2, 2009 by IRIS Staff

There will be a temporary shutdown of power on Sat May 2, from 8am to noon to verify Building Automation Function with loss of power.

All network equipment, including wireless, should run on UPS and then emergency power once the main generator kicks in. While we expect no problems, this is the first operational test of the network UPSs.

(Note: All switches successfully remained online over the weekend. May 4, 0900.)

Router Maintenance

April 28, 2009 by IRIS Staff

As a followup to the network disruption Friday afternoon, I’ll be retesting the primary Cory Hall 10Gb module, and will reconnect the secondary links which were disabled Friday.

I anticipate no service disruption, but because the line card is suspect, and there is potential for problems, this work is scheduled for very early in the morning.

Unfortunately some of the problems we initially diagnosed as part of the routing troubles turned out to be server misconfiguration.

Network routing & DNS disruptions

April 24, 2009 by IRIS Staff

We experienced several related network disruptions Friday afternoon. Beginning with reports at noon of DNS outages from Sutardja Dai Hall, there initially appeared to be problems with that building’s router failing to forward packets correctly. Resetting the links to the DNS service switches initially appeared to solve the issue, but additional connectivity problems between Cory and S-D were discovered later.

While following error messages generated by the primary 10Gb line card in the Cory Hall router, some wired subnets in Cory were temporarily isolated from the rest of the network and the Internet. This outage from 4:20-4:30pm occurred when the suspect line card failed to resume forwarding traffic after running diagnostics. Network staff were immediately aware of that disruption and quickly reestablished basic connectivity on a different port.

While the symptoms have been mitigated, the root cause of the outage has not been fully diagnosed and network is running without full redundancy. Network personnel are planning followup work and are actively monitoring this problem in the event that it reoccurs.
