Sutardja Dai Hall switch updates

May 18, 2009 by IRIS Staff

We’ve experienced unexpected blade reboots and multicast errors on some of the new switches in Sutardja Dai Hall. Per the vendor’s suggestion, I’ll be upgrading these to a newer software release.

Subnets Affected: 128.32.156.0/24, 128.32.247.0/25, 169.229.14.0/24, 169.229.222.0/23

The code revisions are close, so we expect to be able to perform a hitless upgrade; there should be no perceivable disruption. Nevertheless, I’m scheduling a 45 minute maintenance window (1715-1800) in case of problems.

UPDATE

Unfortunately, contrary to the documentation, the upgrade required all the line cards be reset, leading to roughly 1-2 minutes of perceived outage per switch and again for the main router. Also, the 3rd floor switch needed manual intervention to reboot the backup managment module a second time. So much for “hitless” failover. All services are operational.
